A few days ago my pc started overheating and crashing. I investigated and found that the CPU fan is spinning very slowly, without my changing any settings recently.
The fan seems to spin just barely fast enough to avoid stalling, and allows the cpu to get up to 100c.
Every 10-40 minutes it starts spinning at max speed for a while before going back to just barely spinning. In my motherboard BIOS' hardware monitor the CPU fan reads 0 RPM, while my chassis fan is fine.
Things I've tried:
-
Clearing CMOS. This seems to fix it initially half of the time, but the issue starts back up after 20 minutes or so.
-
Plugging the fan into the second cpu fan header. Nothing changed.
-
Loading the default BIOS profile, such that there aren't any overclock settings active. Still the same issue.
Computer Specs:
-
i5 4690k @4.4ghz, 1.28v
-
RX 580
-
MSI z97 Gaming 5
-
750W Rosewill power supply.
-
Coolermaster hyper 212 evo
-
Default 120mm fan that came with the above
-
nzxt 120mm fan in the chassis.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hi guys I have an fx8350 buid and I notice that the cpu fan runs at 530 - 590 RPM. The cpu temp its arround 84F / 29C. Is that normal ?
I'm literally so desperate. As soon as i start my PC, the CPU fans are freaking out. Core temp and bios say cpu temp is about 30ยฐC and i have set the "silent" fan profile. But for someone me reason both my cpu fans sre running at 2000+ RPM. I have reset the bios already and i have no idea now what could be happening. And my pc is so LOUD. I built it myself only a few months ago and it's been fine until now, this just started yesterday. CPU is an i5 13600k, asus rog strix B-760-F mobo.... (the other cha fans are controlled seperately in case you were wondering. There are like 6 of them)
Hey guys, I built my PC last November and it's ran well since then but within the past few days I've noticed something that I think is a bit odd.
I bought The Witcher 3 to play when my friends aren't on or when I just want to play a good single player game. While playing, I noticed that my PC fans were speeding up and slowing down what I considered to be pretty randomly. I figured it was since I had a lot of the graphics turned up pretty high so I turned some of them down but the fans still seemed to be fluctuating in rpm's. I then noticed they were doing similar fluctuations while I was playing CS:GO, where I have all but one or two settings turned down as low as possible.
I have an NZXT kraken AIO so I checked the connections plugging in the pump to make sure they weren't loose or anything. I guess that really only leaves my GPU fans and case fans but I'm not sure what I need to do next if there is anything wrong in the first place.
My build is as follows:
Case: NZT S340 elite
CPU: Ryzen 5 1600
GPU: Asus Dual Series 1070
CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62
Case Fans: stock NZXT for exhaust and stock kraken fans for intake
Edit: I usually play with headphones on so this may have started earlier but when i was playing The Witcher using my speakers is when I first noticed the fans doing this. I also had my headphones off when I was playing CS:GO and noticed it.
UPDATE: Managed to connect two more fans to the PSU, they now spin at full speed, case is cool enough, but I'll probably buy a fan controller as advised, thanks for the help!
Hi, I've been having some problems with my case fans spinning slowly. I recently upgraded my PC with a new GPU and more RAM. I then later added three extra 140mm case fans:

Everything worked well for a couple of weeks, but then I noticed that the led lights on the fans were dimmer than before, and saw that all my fans connected to the motherboard spun slower (with exeption of the CPU cooler). One of the new fans is connected directly to the PSU, and it's still spinning at full speed.
I do use SpeedFan but only two of the fans show up there, and I can't control the speed, never did.
I also checked BIOS, but the settings are the same as before, I never changed anything, and I don't know shit about voltage and things like that, so I don't dare touch any of those settings without help. I also dont have enough connectors on the PSU to plug all the fans in directly, though I'm not 100% sure, and will check after I post this post.
So in total:
-4 case fans spin slower (two new, two older), all connected to various points on the motherboard.
-1 case fans still spins at same speed, connected directly to PSU
-CPU cooler still spins the same.
My PC specs:
Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E, X58, Socket-1366
CPU: Intel i7 930 2,8 mhz
PSU: Silver Power SP-SS650 650W
GPU: SAPPHIRE TECHNOLOGY Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-X- 3 Gb GDDR5 - PCI
RAM: CORSAIR Vengeance Performance 2 x 4 GB DDR3-1600 - PC3-12800 - CL9
CPU cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H80
Hard-drive: Hitachi Deskstar# 7K1000.C 1TB
DVD drive: Sony NEC Optiarc DVDยฑRW burner AD-7240S
Case: Fractal Design Define R2 Black Pearl with 3 older fans and 3 new ones
(Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to write as much detail as possible.)
It's possible the motherboard's fan headers don't supply enough power; how do the fans work if you plug them directly into the PSU?
Not enough power running to the fans, they are full of cat/dog and/or pubic hair or something adding resistance?
More likely they aren't receiving the same voltage as before, although how are you sure they are slower than before without being able to measure the speeds anyway, it could be dust buildup creating an optical illusion.
