How can i get my computer to recognize my HDMI port?
How can I enable the HDMI port on my computer?
You probably bricked it. Some devices don't have appropriate safeguards in their firmware update procedures, so if you unplug it in the middle of a firmware update, the new firmware may have only been written partway, leaving the overall firmware image corrupted and unusable. Check with the vendor for recovery procedures, but it might be irrecoverably bricked.
Sounds like the driver did not get installed properly.
If the only thing you changed prior to it stopping to work;
- Open Device Manager (Windows+X).
- Find the Firmware tab and open it.
- Open the one you recently updated (double click).
- Driver Tab.
- Roll Back Driver (middle option).
Then reboot and it should work. Then re-do the installation of the firmware.
Not all USB-C ports support video output. You should check the specifications on your particular model.
Only USB-C port with USB 3.1 or above version can stream video.
Hi Lucy. I'm Greg here to help.
I see a lot of reported issues with USB-C to HDMI adapters, in fact any adapters for monitors in Windows are very likely not to work for many reasons because the native method is always much, much better.
But you can troubleshoot USB-C to HDMI monitor connections not working to see if one of these fixes work - I've collected them all:

Feel free to ask back any questions. If you'll post back detailed results then I may know what to suggest next, if necessary.

I have been using an HDMI cable + HDMI to USB-C adapter to connect two monitors to my laptop. My main monitor is directly plugged in to the HDMI-socket, and the USB-C adapter to the only USB-C socket on the laptop. It's been working flawlessly until yesterday. Now the second monitor just displays "No HDMI signal" and goes to sleep mode. It does not even recognize me plugging in the USB-C cable. Take note that I've done zero (0, nil, no) changes to my setup.
Naturally I thought that the adapter was faulty since I did some testing with the USB-C socket (it charged my iPhone), and the HDMI-cable was working. Purchased a new HDMI to USB-C cable but to no avail.
On my laptop the device manager shows my monitor as a "BillBoard Service".
Has anyone run into this problem? Google is not my friend in this matter, even though I am a man of lurking the internet. Can someone point me in the right direction here?
Many thanks.
Edit: Okay so it got solved by turing the laptop off, then holding the on button for 30 seconds and letting go. What this triggered I have no idea but it might help someone out.
Windows version: 10.0.19044 Build 19044
Hardware: Lenovo laptop with 1650ti Nvidia & AMD Ryzen 5 4600H (AMD Radeon Graphics)
Recent softwares: I have used "SpaceDesk" a software used to share your pc screen to you apple device. (I have deleted it)
The problem: I'm trying to connect a WORKING(checked) screen with WORKING(checked) hdmi cable to my laptop. But the pc won't even see it being connected. It has worked in the past many times, before i had downloaded the "spacedesk" software.
What have i tried: I have look at almost every single video/posts/forums i could find, tried everything in order, tried to connect with another hdmi cable, tried to use another screen, software updates, command lines for fixing broken windows softwares, checking for driver updates (all graphics are up to date), i suspect the "spacedesk" is my problem, but i don't know why it doesn't still work after deleting it.
Last thing i want to do is recovery, i don't have the energy or the time to find & collect & store all of my personal files just to fix a problem that shouldn't be here. Any help is appreciated, thank you in advence.
EDIT: Nothing worked, i guess the port is broken. Going to send it for repair. I don't know how a hdmi port just stops working while not using it.
I have exactly the same probleme. It is not related to the devices attached, as I have another business computer running Windows 11 during my worktime attached to the same devices without any problem.
It must be something specific to my private computer.
The solution above brought no change and no detected issues.
Any other help you can give?
Hello, welcome to the Microsoft community.
Based on your description, your issue is a USB-C to HDMI driver error displaying as an unknown USB device (port reset failed) on your device.
You can try connecting your converter to another computer to see if it works properly.
You can also try a clean boot to see if your computer still has this error. A clean boot can help you determine if the issue is caused by third-party software.
- Press Windows+R, type msconfig.
- Open System Configuration, select the General tab, and choose Selective Startup.
- Uncheck the box for Load startup items.
- Go to the Services tab, click Hide all Microsoft services in the lower-left corner, and then click Disable all.
- Click OK and restart your computer. (Be sure to select Hide all Microsoft services first, then click Disable all, as this may cause unforeseen issues if not done in this order.)
- Check if the problem reoccurs.
Note: A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs so you can determine if background programs are interfering with your game or program and help you identify the cause of the problem. It will help you get back on track.
In addition, you can click the Windows key, type Device Manager, find your driver, manually uninstall it, and then restart your computer to see if it recognizes your device properly.
If the problem persists, you can try repairing the system.
- Search for CMD, find Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
- Enter the following commands one by one, making sure to execute the next command only after the previous one is completed:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- After the scan is complete, you can check the scan information to see if any issues were detected and repaired.
I have noticed in your description that there may be warnings in the Event Viewer. You can upload a screenshot for us to help you analyze the cause of your issue and provide a more accurate solution.
I hope the above information is helpful to you.
