r/tax on Reddit: Has anyone received a letter from their state franchise tax board instead of the IRS?
February 1, 2023 -

I am a bit puzzled why the California FTB sent me a letter saying I had $700 other income from last year‘s taxes. Wondering why the notice didn’t come from the IRS and why they don’t just ask for the amount they need. I can’t find any difference than what I filed last year. I’d rather just pay and be done with it.

The "letter" is probably a 1099-MISC, which is a tax document sent by whoever paid you. In this case, I'm guessing the California FTB paid you $700 last year as part of the "California Middle Class Tax Refund." It is not a bill. It is an income statement. You may need to include this amount as income when you file your 2022 federal income tax return. (I say "may" because apparently the IRS has not reached a definitive conclusion about whether the MCTR is actually taxable income or not.) https://www.ocregister.com/2023/01/27/is-californias-middle-class-tax-refund-payment-taxable-by-uncle-sam/

Wondering why the notice didn’t come from the IRS The IRS doesn't administer California state taxes. This is like wondering why the IRS didn't write to you about your local electric bill. That's not what they do. Did you, by chance, get a $700 refund on your California taxes last year? If so, this letter is simply documenting that. This matters only if you also itemized deductions on your federal return last year. If you didn't itemize deductions last year, this is not "income" and you don't have to do anything about it. If you did itemize, this will get factored into your return this year. The problem is that you get to deduct state taxes, but you have to do that before you know your actual state tax amount. So you deduct the withholding, and then if it turns out the withholding was wrong you go back and correct it next year. Again, if you took the standard deduction, none of that even matters.

r/tax on Reddit: California Franchise Tax Board - Received a Letter but Already Paid
April 20, 2024 -

I received a notice of balance due from the California Franchise Tax Board for $1,645. $1,505 as the prepayment tax assessment and $140 for underpayment penalties.

However, I paid the $1,505 back in February. I have the confirmation number. I've been trying to call the FTB but have been unable to connect with anyone for the past 3 days.

Should I make the $140 payment online and just forget about it? The payment is due on 5/29. I requested to open an account but am waiting on a pin number that will arrive via mail after this date so I can see my payment history online.

This is the first year I've had to file with California as an S-Corp so I'm new to all this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
