Now the Lion Cub is somewhat safe, and resting Elphaba and Fiyero are finally given some time to think and interact. These are musical lines, but again they hit differently with the meeting scene in the movie. Fiyero constantly uses derogatory humour about himself/his persona, so offhandedly that I’m not sure he even realises he’s doing it anymore.

They seem to take him off school grounds, they have their moment, and then Fiyero says he better get the cub to safety and dashes off but I assume there isn't a local lion rescue org nearby. Do we know what he does with the little guy?
I know that the cub becomes the Cowardly Lion but do the books or the musical say what happens him after his rescue?

I was watching the movie, and maybe this was obvious to everyone else, but it crossed my mind when they released the lion 'No! He was raised in captivity! He won't survive out there!' just instinctively, seeing everything as an actual forest and actual lion just changed my thoughts process.
Now obviously animals are more human like in this film, so he would have survived, but it made me think. The new professor did say being raised in captivity makes animals unable to speak....
What if being caged during formative years gave the lion a speech impediment and his mild nature?
Idk if this was obvious to everyone else, but seeing the animals as actual animals instead of hybrids made things make a little more sense.

I definitely do think the Cowardly Lion's "cowardly" nature is just PTSD from his experience as a cub. Seperated from his parents (they were most likely killed), trapped in a little cage, and then put on display would be incredibly traumatic, especially for a toddler. Elphaba 100% did the right thing rescuing him and letting him go, but he was way too little to be on his own (I wish she could've snuck him into her dorm. I'd love to see her and Glinda attempting co-parenting).

In Act 2 of the musical, The Tin Man blames Elphaba for the Lion being cowardly because she “didn’t let him fight his own battles when he was young.” But honestly? That reasoning makes is…very flawed. “How dare this wicked witch defend a defenseless baby animal from being tortured!” Your explanation is actually much better.

The Cowardly Lion is the lion cub Elphaba and Fiyero brought into the woods during Part 1. This is spun into blaming Elphaba for the lion's cowardice - in the song "March of the Witch Hunters" the Tin Man has the lines: And the lion also / Has a grievance to repay / If she'd let him fight his own battles / When he was young / He wouldn't be a coward today!
