You can approximate the size of the furniture by calculating the size of the smallest rectangular prism that would fit the furniture. You can then use that prism and compare it to the size of the space you want to store it in. If the prism fits, you're all good. If the prism doesn't fit, it's likely too small of a space. You can find the smallest rectangular prism by finding the longest distance on each axis and using that as one side of the prism. For example: Say I have a dresser which is made up of a 20 by 10 by 30 unit box. The top and bottom are surrounded by a 3 unit molding. The drawers including the knobs stick out 5 units from the box. The distance from the back to the front is 3 (the moulding) + 10 (the box) + 3 (the moulding) + 2 (the part of the drawers that stick out of the moulding) = 18 units. The distance side to side is 3 + 20 + 3 = 26 units. The distance top to bottom is simply 30 units. In real life you wouldn't need to take into account the different parts of the dresser, you could just take a tape measure from the moulding to the drawer knob. So that gives you a rectangular prism of size 18 by 26 by 30. I would then measure where I'm wanting to store it and see if it could fit an 18 by 26 by 30 rectangular prism. If it can't, I'm probably out of luck. If it's very close, you may want to try anyway and see if you can squeeze it in. Answer from anon_113606752 on reddit.com

r/theydidthemath on Reddit: [REQUEST] How to calculate if furniture will fit in my car?
January 31, 2022 -

The hatch of my car has an opening of 25 x 38 with a diagonal of 45 (units omitted because they don't matter). So a piece of sheet metal 45 wide will fit in diagonally... But what about something that's not flat? Say a dresser, 18 x 43. How do you calculate where the furniture intersects with the sides of the opening, and the maximum size of the object that will fit?

5 Ways To Transport Big Items That Won't Fit In Your Car
October 13, 2022 - Just last week I fit a 3X5′ foot bookcase in my car (the guy I bought it from said he had never seen anything like it!), and a few days before that I hauled a lot of compost in tubs, and before that 4 kitchen chairs. I also volunteer for my food co-op, and I think I maxed out the VW at 9 full-size ice chests. ... Had no idea you could rent the truck! That is so helpful and will definitely benefit us this summer.

Online Furniture: How Can I Tell If It'll Fit In My Car?
June 20, 2025 - “My most genius ChatGPT hack that I’ve never heard anyone talk about is when you’re buying furniture on Facebook Marketplace,” Caruso says. “Put the dimensions of the furniture, along with your car’s make and model into ChatGPT.” · She says that after a quick scan of available data pertaining to both the furniture and the specific vehicle, the AI “will tell you whether it’ll fit or not.” According to her, this method has saved her a lot of legwork trying to figure out if she needs a specialized vehicle to haul secondhand items she buys online.

12 Iconic Ikea Products You Won't Believe Will Fit In A Small Hatchback | Autobytel.com
If you’re a small car owner, no doubt you’ve gone to Ikea, gazed wistfully at a piece of furniture and sadly thought, "Forget it. There’s no way that will fit in my car." In actuality, you can fit an impressive array of larger Ikea products in a small compact car, according to Daniela Rivera, marketing specialist for Ikea’s Costa Mesa, CA location, “Ikea's products are compressed and flat packed so you can fit them in your car and take them home that day,” Rivera said.

How big a vehicle do I need? - cargo carspace rentalvehicle | Ask MetaFilter
Looked at images of Ford Edge and Pacifica cargo spaces. I think Pacifica is the easiest bet. If the rental agency were to take out the two removable seats (which is simple but heavy/clunky to do yourself), it would be far and away the best choice in my opinion. Without taking them out, I believe the chairs will still fit, but you will need to lay them flat and interlock them so that you can stack them.

If you really do have a small car, and the back seat doesn't open into the trunk, try this: See if your passenger seat will recline fully, then angle the box into the front passenger door, so that it lays over the passenger seat stretching diagonally, pushing it as far back as it will go. You may need to lift the rear up so it sits on the top of the back seat and against your rear window. posted by kimdog at 11:17 AM on April 27, 2010 · I have a 2009 Nissan Versa hatchback and I was able to fit this exact desk in the back of my car.

However, there are some ways that you can increase the cargo capacity of your SUV. A hitch-cargo carrier is a great way to add extra space to your SUV. Can You Transport a Recliner in Your Vehicle? Tips for Loading and Moving - La-Z-Boy Southeast
April 26, 2024 - Many recliners, such as lift recliners, also have power mechanisms that significantly add to the weight of the furniture. Consider the shape of the recliner in relation to the shape of your vehicle’s cargo space. Will the recliner need to be positioned upright, or can it be laid flat? Will it fit through the vehicle’s doors without any issues? One advantage of La-Z-Boy recliners is that the backs are removable. This can be particularly helpful in smaller vehicles or tight spaces.
