You're doing nothing wrong and it's a side effect of the sale and the current owners making a complete mess of things. That's why you have to get links from a forum thread that takes you to 3rd party sites.

Until 31st Dec 2016 I was also providing a mirror site (https://getwinamp.com/) which had the 5.666 build 3516 patched installer on it but I was forced to take it down due to a grudge against me (I was the developer responsible for the 5.66x release at the end).

As such, http://www.filehorse.com/download-winamp/ is the next best thing as that is the same version that I was providing (i.e. it saves you having to manually apply the post-release patched plug-ins and general clean-up to remove the things that just don't work anymore).

Well, IMHO, nowadays WACUP ( r/WACUP ) is the best version of Winamp. It has Winamp 5.666 (or at least parts of it, as far as I understand) running under the hood, and better yet, it’s in active development. Also, it has a lot of improvements, and bug fixes that (IMHO) improves both the user experience, and compatibility with modern Windows versions. Although that I agree that I liked old versions, thing is that as I also manage my music library on WACUP (something in that WACUP/Winamp excelled at), and that I have already some rules defined to keep that library organized, I like latest versions even more than the classic ones.
