Please note that the following is just my opinion and I am curious what others out there think about the possibility of Windows 10 22H2 EOL changing beyond October 14th, 2025.
I truly believe that Microsoft will eventually announce that they will be changing the EOL date of Windows 10 22H2 for both home and pro users. I feel that the announcement will be made in the summer of 2025 just before the current EOL date scheduled for October 2025. They are going to wait and see how many other users convert over to Windows 11 before the announcement is made.
Here are some reasons why I believe the EOL date is going to change:
Microsoft reopens Beta channel for Windows 10 22H2 - The fact that Microsoft has reopened the Beta channel a year before EOL is an interesting decision to say the least. Why would do they do this unless they have intentions to provide new features to Windows 10. But again, why do this when there's only one year left before EOL?
There are already providing security updates to Windows 10 IoT LTSC 21H2 until 2032 and these updates can be easily ported over to Windows 10 22H2. Extending support beyond October 14th, 2025 would not be that much additional work for Microsoft as they are already providing the support for LTSC.
What happened to Windows 12? There is some speculation out there that Windows 11 24H2 was supposed to be Windows 12 (hence the large jump in final build number "26100"). Also, it is possible that Microsoft has reverted their decision to create a new OS every 3 years and Windows 11 will be the new long term OS for years to come. If Microsoft decided to just keep updating Windows 11 instead of creating a new version of Windows, then this might explain why Microsoft has decided to update Windows 10 22H2 and reopen the Beta channel. It would be easier for Microsoft to maintain 2 OS's (Win 10/11) instead of 3 OS's (Win 10/11/12).
With the ratio of Windows 10 to Windows 11 users still being around 70:30 with only one year to go, if Microsoft doesn't do something, by October 2025 you are going to have a lot of upset PC users. I also believe that Microsoft is taking the threat of Windows users migrating to Linux seriously as there are more and more Linux builds out there that make the transition very simple.
What are your thoughts on this topic and do you think Microsoft is going to change EOL for WIndows 10 22H2?
Windows 10 'end of support'?
Windows 10 22H2 EOL is ~2 years away - should I stop loading new laptops with Win10?
Windows 10 'end of support' - still Oct 14th, 2025? Ent/Edu extended to 2027? Free or $$$?
How Do You Feel About Windows 10 Going EOL?
Not getting any feature updates is actually a good news. At least I don't have to deal with random, half-baked ideas forced on the OS every now and then.
