Just buy a Product Key because it will unlock all of the Pro features and it'll look like it's doing a big Feature Update from Windows Update. All of the features are already there, they're just "dormant" in the Home edition. So unlocking the Pro edition simply unpacks them and installs them. You will never find a genuine Product Key for less than the normal retail price. This includes the slightly lower price of the System Builder's edition, which is "OEM". "Embedded" means the Product Key is embedded in the motherboard, which results in automatic activation. It doesn't matter here though. Entering a Product Key for Windows 11 Pro will convert your installation of Windows 11 Home into Windows 11 Pro. Make no mistake about this: it's not an upgrade. Yep, I just said it's not an upgrade! An upgrade is when you replace something with something better. An upgrade is an improvement. Windows 11 Pro isn't better than Windows 11 Home, and it's not an improvement over the Home edition. It's just a different edition, and it was designed for businesses. So don't do this if you simply think that the Pro edition is better than and/or an improvement over the Home edition. 99% of normal consumers have everything they need with Windows 11 Home. I'm only saying that because it's $200 for a Windows 11 Pro license. So if you're going to buy it, then make sure you know it's worth it! Currently I have Windows 11 Home Single Language.

I got product key of Windows 11 Pro (new, genuine, unused).

The key might be OEM or something so might not be usable to upgrade. The generic key should have reset it allowing you to go to Win 11 Pro afterwards if the key is proper. How are you sure the key is even genuine in the first place? It possible the key is bad and you might need another one.

There is no difference. You can upgrade from Home to Pro by going to the Activation portion of Settings, hit change key, and enter your Pro key. You can upgrade to Windows 11 by selecting the option for that in Windows Update. It does not matter which one you do first.

I don't know why there is so much hate with Windows 11 and users prefer 10, past 4 years I didn't find a single thing I could do in W 10 and 11 cannot do, for me an upgrade is an upgrade, as simple as that, so no disadvantages IMO.

It will give an error, ignore it and reboot.

Now your windows will not be activated.

Use the MAS again to activate it by follwing the instructions.

I just purchased a new windows 11 home desktop and need to upgrade to 11 pro. I was unaware that may require using a microsoft account but I would like to keep the account local. I hope this post is relevant to the sub, if not please let me know. I just got a new laptop and it comes with Windows 11 Home. I want to upgrade it to Windows 11 Pro, and when I go through the settings, it redirects me to Microsoft store, where it currently shows $139 for upgrade, that is a bit too overpriced for me. Is there any other official way to do this upgrade that is at least a bit cheaper?

I remember seeing $99 price for this upgrade a few months ago, is that correct, i.e. did they increase the price recently, or am I just misremembering?

To be clear, I'm not looking for "grey market" solutions/keys, so please do not recommend any website that is selling Windows keys of unknown origin.

Purchases made in the Microsoft Store app will grant you a digital license for Pro that is tied to your MS account. You do not get an actual key, but you can reinstall Pro and reactivate.

If you upgrade through Microsoft, it ties it to your Microsoft account and you can use it on a new device should you ever decide to upgrade (can’t run on two at once, but can transfer)

I'm not sure what you are asking, all you need to do is go to the Activation settings, hit change key, enter your Pro key then reboot when prompted. You will then be on Pro, you don't need any "tricks".

As the title suggests, I have a question about Microsoft‘s license jungle. So I recently got a notebook from my brother with a preinstalled Windows 11 Home. I wanted to upgrade it to Windows 11 Pro. Since it was pre-installed with Windows 11 Home, it'll most definitely be a digital key which is linked to the Microsoft account used during the setup. So, even if you clean install Windows 10 Home on that PC now, it'll fetch that digital key linked to your MS account. So now, you can buy a Windows 10 Pro key for cheaper, upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro, and then upgrade to Windows 11 Pro from the System update. Hope that helps!

hey all - I really enjoy reading your posts and comments here. I'm an IT Dir. at a broke-ass non-profit. I though I'd save some money purchasing a half-dozen envy laptops with 11 home with the idea that I'd use techsoup to purchase licenses and install media for 11 pro. Turns out it's a nightmare. drivers missing, etc. Can't get very far in the upgrade.. googling and AI is only marginally helpful. I really need to put these devices in users' hands. Any help on this from people who are not dumb like me would be really appreciated. :-)

From what I remember, all you do is put in the new Pro activation code and the laptop will update itself to Pro.

What drivers are missing? Typically Windows Update will pull down most, but if you are missing drivers as noted by Device Manager, you can just go to the manufacturer's site and download them.

Hey folks, first time posting here...

I'm an IT Tech and do Windows Home to Pro upgrades often. Usually what I do is on the PC that needs the upgrade I open the Microsoft Store and log in with a certain account that has a credit card tied to it.

Then I'll search in the store for the upgrade click the link to purchase the upgrade, do the purchase.

Then I'll have the option to do the upgrade by clicking a link on the store page. It does the in place upgrade, I restart the PC and now I've upgraded from home to pro.

When I do this it usually costs about $99.00 for the upgrade.

But this past week I've noticed that we've seen three different prices to do the upgrade exactly the same way I just described it above. I've seen $99.00 and I've seen $150.00 and $200. What also changed is it says that it is a home to pro upgrade for workstations. Before it did not use the word workstations.

So I'm really confused as to why the pricing is different, why they've added the word workstations and what's going on.

Does anyone have any idea???

The different prices are not all related to "Upgrade" the more expensive is likely a full price and not an Upgrade price.

Any chance some had bogus keys or something

I'm currently using Windows 11 Home, but I'd like to upgrade to Pro because I need access to Hyper-V for school. Is the Microsoft store the only option, or are there LEGAL/NOT STOLEN keys you can buy to upgrade your version?

Have you asked your school? Some schools can offer Microsoft licences to students. Alternatively you could try azure for students.

Upgrading from the Store will be the cheapest/easiest thing, as it is discounted. You can buy a Pro license elsewhere such as Microsoft.com or Bestbuy.com, however it is the full price and not the discounted upgrade price. !cheapkey u/ShanksGG

I ordered a laptop which comes with Windows 11 and most probably it's Windows 11 home. I want to upgrade from home to pro. I saw https://github.com/massgravel/Microsoft-Activation-Scripts/issues/55 and they mentioned a cd key. Does that cd key really work?

If you use the MAS tool in that GitHub repo you can upgrade from home to pro. The issue you linked is old so they changed how you upgrade using MAS now but it's still easy to upgrade from home to pro using it
