Dear Varina Wooster,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Community!
I appreciate you providing detailed information about your current setup and needs. I understand that deciding whether to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro can be an important decision, especially when considering your business operations.
Based on the information you've shared, here’s a breakdown of what you might want to consider:
- Remote Desktop Access:
- Windows 11 Home does not natively support hosting Remote Desktop sessions, which means you cannot access your desktop remotely using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) if both devices are running the Home edition. However, you can still use third-party software to accomplish this.
- Windows 11 Pro, on the other hand, includes built-in Remote Desktop hosting capabilities, allowing you to easily connect to your desktop from your laptop or any other device with RDP support.
- Security and Management Features:
- BitLocker Encryption is another feature exclusive to Windows 11 Pro. It provides advanced encryption for your data, which is especially valuable if you’re dealing with sensitive business information on your laptop.
- Group Policy Management and Assigned Access are Pro features that offer greater control over your system, though these are more often useful in larger organizations with multiple users.
- Local vs. Cloud Storage: Since you are using Dropbox for file storage, it may mitigate the need for some of the advanced file-sharing and access features offered by Windows 11 Pro. Dropbox allows you to access files from any device, regardless of the OS version, as long as you have internet access.
- Future Expansion: If you plan on expanding your business, especially with the addition of e-commerce, you may eventually require the advanced networking and security features available in Windows 11 Pro. However, for your current needs, these may not be immediately necessary.
Given your current usage—3D CAD, Office 365, Photoshop, Google Workspace, and Dropbox—the Windows 11 Home edition should be sufficient for your needs. However, if you anticipate a need for seamless remote desktop access or if you require enhanced security features (like BitLocker), an upgrade to Windows 11 Pro could be worth considering.
If remote access is a key concern, and you prefer to use Microsoft’s built-in tools over third-party software, then the upgrade might be justified. Otherwise, Windows 11 Home should serve you well with the tools and functionalities you currently use.
Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or need additional advice. I'm here to help!

Not sure what to install, windows 11 home or windows 11 pro, will be mainly for gaming, i know both are the same for gaming, but there is a few things i need windows 11 pro for, just don't want to install Pro, until i know it wont effect gaming in anyway, meaning is Pro resource hungry compared to Home, and gaming performance suffers, or will PRO be exactly the same as windows 11 home, thx
What is the biggest difference between Windows 11 Pro and Home?
Does Windows 11 Pro have better security than Home?
Does Windows 11 Pro work better with Microsoft 365?
