I am trying to create a recovery drive for a brand new Dell computer running Windows 11 and keep getting this error with different flash drives: "Connect a USB flash drive. The drive must be able to hold at least 32 GB, and everything on the drive will be deleted."

i've tried formatting the drive exFat, and NTFS, neither work.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Al
I dusted off an old laptop I bought secondhand and did a reset as I had no password for the existing account. I got a sandisk 64gb USB (USB 3.0 but backwards compatible with USB 2.0) as a recovery drive
Problems:
For some reason windows does not detect the USB drive I set up for recovery and I see no obvious way to force it to sense it (I have put it in every port)
I get a THREaD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER error on restart
I am working with no admin account or any account
Safe mode does not work
Did I brick my computer?

As the title suggests, I can't seem to use the recovery software to create a recovery drive.
I've tried formatting the flash drive, tried using different ports, etc to no avail.
File explorer opens the flash drive fine and I can use it there but not with the recovery software. Any solutions please?
I've gone through this procedure several times. I formatted a new 32GB flash drive, and it shows "empty" in explorer.
Steps 1 and 2 seem to complete ok. Then it starts backing up files (progress bar repeats) without my clicking "Next".
Then it says to connect a usb drive, has to be 32gb, everything will be deleted.
I put the flash drive in the USB slot for step 3 and it starts running without clicking "Next" (progress bar repeats).
When it finishes (I guess), I don't get a chance to click "next" or "create". It goes back to "connect a usb flash drive". This happens whether the flash drive is inserted before I start or after.
What's happening? How can I get this done?
The last USB device connected to this computer malfunctioned, was the message I received after plugging in the USB to connect my (roccat 7.1 elo) headphones. For some odd reason I can't connect the headphones after plugging it in, all that will happen is a series of disconnect and reconnect sounds. I've looked everywhere but can't solve my problem. Could someone please help?
I have a 15.42gb usb stick with the iso file on it, I've plugged it into all my USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, and I'm still not sure why it won't work, does anyone have any advice?
I also have to have 250 characters to post so this is a little extra blurb
I just built a PC for my sister, boots into BIOS and everything looks good until I try to install windows using the installation media on a usb drive (brand new drive btw). When I boot from the USB drive it launches into recovery instead of the installation wizard or whatever you want to call it. I have built pcs several times before and never encountered this issue.
I know that this is the wrong subreddit. Windows 11 cannot detect my USB stick and according to Disk Managment, Windows cannot detect the specified file. I cannot fix the issue and I am wanting to switch to Endeavour OS but I just cannot do it because the USB stick is inaccessible. File explorer cannot access it. I'm stuck with little to no clue on fixing this issue.
Trying to do a fresh install of Windows after this Bitlocker fiasco locked me out of my laptop, but it's not detecting my drive to install Windows on. I'm so done I just want to use my fucking laptop.
I can't link my last post but this is basically what happened.
-
Installed Windows update
-
Saw Bitlocker bluescreen
-
Bluescreen went away?
-
Back to Windows sign-on but password doesn't work (and immediately required A1B2C3 check and restart after every attempt even though I had not tried to log in yet)
Please help me :(
I have the same issue. Brand new Dell G15. Brand new 32GB flash. Formatted to FAT32. Scanned, and found no errors. Create program does not recognize it in either port. (Windows updates up-to-date).
Thoughts? (other than "Windows is ****"?)
I have the same problem with my laptop Dell XPS 15, the usb flash is recognized by it, but not when creating the recovery drive.
Edit.
Solved. Huge thanks to @N3utro Was one of my SSD drives failing that caused the blocks. As soon as I disconnected them going through install was a breeze. Sucks I had to find out via a forum rather than Microsoft documenting it.
So I've definitely made some ill advised changes in bios due to a recent system stuck in boot loop.
On reset the Restarting page would show along with a cursor but would hang. On reboot it would sit with the windows logo and infinite spinning logo
After enough rebooting and letting the auto repair run I could get back into the system, although with a bunch of event viewer errors and no network (I had run sfc /scannow. Chkdsk on my m2 drive. And all came back ok. Restart. Boom rinse repeat.
I got to a point where I updated my bios. I was still able to boot after the auto repair run. But I've gone and reset the secure boot keys to default (not that I recall them ever being custom).
Now the auto repair will complete and leave me with a black screen and cursor (not like the it's booted into windows cell alt del and try run explorer.exe look)
I have an MSI Pro MB650-a Wifi board and Ryzen 7.
Now, I can still get into the bios settings and even choose a recovery media usb to boot from. This was created on another pc using the Microsoft media creation tool. But when I try to launch it it gets stuck at a purple/blue screen with a cursor.
I've come to terms that I've likely lost the c:/ data (it's fine I have backups on other devices, just not an image).
But now I can't even get the installation media to get me to a point of installing windows.
Currently I have secure boot set to Enabled Standard. (I saw a post somewhere that someone having the same blue / purple screen hang saying they needed to turn it on to resolve it.
I've tried with it on / off / custom / maximum security / best Os Compatibility etc.
Any idea what to try next? I just want to do a fresh install
Sorry I know it's a long post. Ty for reading. And appreciate any help.

Hello. I have Windows 11 23H2 on my laptop. I had previously purchased several 32GB SanDisk Cruzer USB flash drives. I used them on my two desktops and the laptop to make Recovery Drives for Windows 10. Windows 10 is still on my desktops, but the laptop has been upgraded to 11. I decided to update the Recovery Drive. I put in the one with the Win10 recovery for the laptop, called up screen to create a recovery drive, but Windows 11 won't accept that drive as a recovery drive.
Windows 11 sees the drive and can read and write to it, but says it's too small for a recovery drive and I need one that's at least 32 GB. It turns out that storage fully amounts to about 30GB. So I bought a 64GB USB-C flash drive. Windows accepts it and starts to create the recovery drive on it. It formats it to 32GB FAT32, starts the process, and then fails about a third of the way through saying there was an error (without specifying what the error is). Windows' Disk Management won't remove the volume. I tell it to remove it, and it accepts the command, but nothing happens. I used a 3rd-party partitioning program to wipe the drive and format it as NTFS. I tried again to create a recovery drive, but it does the same thing, formatting the drive to 32GB FAT32 and failing about 20 minutes into the process.
So I'm wondering if it's that it's a USB-C drive and I should just use a USB 2.0, or maybe the type of drive? It's a Samsung USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1, 64GB. I hate scrapping the drive because 64GB isn't enough storage to be of use. Anyone have any experience with any of this?
When i plug a USB or external hardrive it makes the "doodup" sound and the USB/Hardrive lights up but it never shows up inside the PC. Does anyone know what the deal with this is and how to fix it?
I've been having a problem now where my PC will not detect any and all USB storage devices I plug into it whatsoever. I don't fully know what caused this but I guess it was related to me trying to install 24H2 and then going back after that kept failing. I also tried updating my motherboard an Asus ROG Strix Z-790-E Gaming Wifi Bios to version 2801. So my PC is pretty much back to normal except one problem, it won't read any and all USB storage devices. I have tried these same devices on other computers and they work great.
The problem is that they just don't show up in Windows Explorer so I can check their files within like normal. This is weird!
I did notice that the USB devices do show up in Device Manager so my PC seems to know they're present, but while they do appear in the bottom window list of Disk Management as Removeable Disk, but not in the volume list. So if I try to change their driver letter or such it just gives me an error about the console view not being up to date. And this applies to ANY USB device now. ANY. I don't want to have to format them because that doesn't even seem to be the answer if I have to format any and every USB device I connect.
Also I noticed earlier on Device Manager something was wrong with my RAID controller, so I installed
Intel® Rapid Storage Technology Driver Installation Software with Intel® Optane™ Memory (11th up to 13th Gen Platforms)
Intel RST VMD Controller A77F
and the error on that's gone.
But still no USB storage device works! What do I do!?
Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z-790-E Gaming Wifi (BIOS Version 2801)
Processor: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900K 3.00 GHz
Installed Ram: 128 GB (128 GB usable)
System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Hi, so my USB drive just suddenly stopped showing up in my Files explorer. Tried plugging it into a different computer and same issue. I plugged a different USB drive into both computers and it popped up on them, so it isn’t a computer issue, it’s that specific USB. After a couple videos, I tried looking at it through the Device Manager, and it still don’t even see it pop up. Anyone know how I can fix this? Kinda want to see if there solution or at least a way to diagnose the problem or something before I start assuming infection and crying over my losses.
my acer Aspire A16-51GM is not detecting external hard drives, they do not show up in the file manager, disk management, or even on the device manager
i have made sure the drives are not the problem, they still show up and function on my other devices, and the usb ports are not the problem either, i tested them with a usb mouse
my laptop stopped detecting the drive while i was deleting files on it if that matters, let me know if you need any more information
Recently had a strange issue pop up seemingly out of the blue. I have an external hard drive and several USB flash drives. Recently none of them work on my primary computer. I have tried various different solutions and contacted manufacturers for support with no response from them. When I plug the devices in they are recognized by the computer and show up in the device manager but appear under other devices. When I check properties it gives me code 28 that no drivers are installed. I have used all of these devices on this computer in the last few months with no problems. When I search for driver updates nothing can be found and manufacturer websites indicate that the device drivers come directly from windows and they do not provide downloads of any drivers. I have tried different USB ports, different cables, turned off power saving options, reformatted them and have had no luck. All three devices work on a separate laptop but not on my primary computer. Any ideas on how I can solve this or what might be causing the problem?
