Thank you very much for replying, Martin.
However, the solutions you mention are impossible for me unless you know certain shortcuts.
The problem is, my problem is not only restricted to the start button not working, the Windows key combinations don't work either (some still did yesterday), but Windows +I, Windows+R etc. do not work, nor can I type in the search bar.
If you have any other ways of getting to Settings etc., please let me know.
Thank you for your help so far.
(Windows 11) Hi guys, my Windows key does not bring up the Start Menu when pressed. The function is restored when I restart the computer. It just doesn't work on the first boot of the day. Shortcuts like Win + D work as normal, so I don't think it's a keyboard problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Where is the Start menu in Windows 11?
You will find the Start menu in the taskbar. It is the very first icon, which shows a Windows logo.
How do I restart Windows without the Start menu?
There are two simple ways to restart your Windows computer without using the Start menu.
You can press Ctrl + Alt + Delete, click on the Power icon in the lower-right corner, and select Restart. You can also try pressing Windows + X, hover your mouse over Shut down or sign out, and choose Restart.
How do I move the Start menu in Windows 11?
You only have two options when you try to change the Start menu location. You can have the Start menu in the middle, or to the left. To change this, go to Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors. Click on the drop-down menu next to Taskbar alignment and make your selection.
Same issue here…the damage is huge. Obviously another Windows 11 gimmick, and the fact that we are forced to use this OS if we want to receive security updates is extremely disappointing.
The only solution that worked was creating another user. Nothing else helped. Migrating all the data from one user to another takes a huge amount of time in my case.
Personally, I want Windows 10 back with full support. We are in another “Windows Vista” era, without real alternatives - unless you’re using 🐧 or 🍎.
Hi Manfred, Michael@CDPH,
Since your Right-click works, we can use that to fix the Left-click without needing a hard reboot.
Method 1: Restart the "Windows Explorer" Process.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. In the "Processes" tab, look for Windows Explorer (it usually has a yellow folder icon). Right-click it and select Restart. The screen will flash black/blank for a few seconds. This is normal. Once the taskbar reappears, try clicking the Start button again.
Method 2: Re-register the Start Menu (The Permanent Fix)
If Method 1 didn't work, the AppX package that runs the Start Menu is likely corrupted. We can force Windows to reinstall it using PowerShell. Right-click the Start button (since that still works) and select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin). Paste the following command exactly as written and press Enter:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
You might see some red text or deployment progression bars. Ignore them. Once the prompt returns, copy and paste this second command to fix the internal "Start Menu Experience":
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Restart your computer.
Method 3: Fix the "Search" Service Loop
Sometimes the Start Menu fails to open because the Search bar next to it is crashing in a loop.
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc (Task Manager). Go to the Details tab. Look for SearchHost.exe.
Right-click it and select End Task. Windows will immediately restart it automatically. Try clicking Start immediately after.
I hope you've found something useful here. If it helps you get more insight into the issue, it's appreciated to ACCEPT ANSWER. Should you have more questions, feel free to leave a message. Have a nice day!

Go to the Details tab.
Scroll down and find explorer.exe.
Right-click on it and select End task.
In the menu bar, click File.
Click Run new task.
Type explorer.exe and press Enter.
2. Re-register all Windows apps
- On your keyboard, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
- Click on File and choose "Run new task"
- Type: powershell. Make sure to put a check on the "Create this task with administrative privileges" box
- Copy and paste the command below then press Enter.
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -register "_.InstallLocation)\appxmanifest.xml" -DisableDevelopmentMode}
Note: Please ignore any red errors and tet the process complete and then restart your PC.
3. Run SFC and DISM to fix corrupted system files.
https://support.microsoft.com/windows/using-system-file-checker-in-windows-365e0031-36b1-6031-f804-8fd86e0ef4ca
Restart your computer.
4. If the issue continues, try a repair in-place upgrade while keeping your files and apps. This helps fix or replace any corrupted files that may be causing the problem.
Note: Before doing so, unplug all unnecessary external peripherals connected to your PC, and temporarily disable any third-party antivirus program to avoid interference.
- Click the 'Download now' button under 'Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO)' and save it to your computer: https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11 (Click the third 'Download Now' button.)
- Run the downloaded file and select 'Yes' when prompted by User Account Control (UAC).
- Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms if you agree.
- On the 'What do you want to do?' screen, select 'Upgrade this PC now' and click 'Next.'
(This stage will download, verify, and create the Windows 10 or 11 installation media.) It will take some time to complete.
- Under 'Choose what to keep,' select 'Keep personal files and apps,' then click 'Next.'
- Click 'Install,' and the installation will begin. (This process will take some time, so please be patient.)
On Windows 11 25H2, the Start menu and Windows key not working after an update matches a known issue in some recent cumulative updates.
Use these steps in order:
- Restart the device fully
If Fast Startup is enabled, a full restart can help the Known Issue Rollback (KIR) fix apply automatically. Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete → Power → Restart. - Install the latest cumulative update (KB5016629 or later)
This Start menu issue is addressed in KB5016629. If possible, open Settings → Windows Update and install all pending updates, especially any cumulative update released after August 9, 2022. - Let Known Issue Rollback (KIR) apply
For affected updates (KB5014668, KB5015814, KB5015882), Microsoft uses KIR to automatically roll back the problematic change. This can take up to 24 hours to propagate to consumer and non‑managed devices. Keeping the device powered on and connected to the internet and restarting it can speed this up. - If this is an enterprise‑managed device
Ask the IT admin to deploy the special Group Policy for Known Issue Rollback:- Open Group Policy Editor → Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → KB5014668 220721_04201 Known Issue Rollback → Windows 11 (original release) and configure it as documented in How to use Group Policy to deploy a Known Issue Rollback.
If the Start menu still does not open after installing the latest cumulative update and allowing time for KIR to apply, contact support or the device administrator, as further investigation of services and drivers may be required.

- Start menu troubleshooting guidance
Most likely this is caused by a recent update, if you are unable to access the settings app, you do not have access to many of the available troubleshooting steps.
Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down
Do this twice
On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt... etc.
Please try each option one at a time, then see if Windows will boot to a stable system.
1
If there is an option to uninstall the latest update, that may be the best option.
2.
Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair
See if Windows startup can repair itself
3
Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore
Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to before the problems started.
Use the keyboard to open Settings and then troubleshoot from there.
- Try opening Settings directly:
- Press Windows logo key + I together.
- If Settings opens, use it to continue troubleshooting.
- If Settings opens, check for Windows updates (this can fix shell/start menu issues):
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update in the left navigation.
- Select Check for updates and install any available updates.
- If the Start button still does not respond but Settings works via the shortcut, use Settings search to reach key areas:
- Press Windows logo key + I to open Settings.
- Use the search box at the top (for example, type "update" or "troubleshoot").
- If Settings does not open at all (even with Windows logo key + I), use basic checks for system responsiveness:
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and see if the security screen appears.
- If the screen is blank/black but the mouse moves, press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.
- If the system is frozen, hold the power button for about 20 seconds to force a restart, then test the Start button and Settings again.
If the problem persists after restarts and updates, it indicates a deeper Windows shell issue and may require more advanced repair (such as in-place repair or reset) beyond the provided steps.

Just kill your explorer.exe shell instance forcing it to restart. That fixed it for me.
By following this post The keyboard cannot type in the start menu.
The cause is that service named TextInputManagementService does not start automatically at startup. And in my PC, there is no option to change it.
So. I use Task Scheduler to run the service at Log On.
# CMD
sc.exe start TextInputManagementService
# PowerShell
Get-Service -Name 'TextInputManagementService' | Start-Service

Also, FN + Windows could resolve your issue. Like I had it couple of minutes ago, during the gaming I accidentally hit Windows + FN and after quitting the game I've noticed that it stopped to work. So I hit again FN + Windows and it worked.
You are a genius! I also had Armory Crate and was about to go into it when I saw your post. How the heck did it get "locked" in the first place I dont know but I do see that little 🔒 on that key which makes sense you need to press Fn to activate/deactivate. Thank you!
