Windows Server 2012 R2 reached its end of life on October 10, 2023, meaning Microsoft no longer provides security updates, bug fixes, technical support, or online content updates for this operating system. After this date, systems running Windows Server 2012 R2 are vulnerable to cyber threats, as no new patches are issued, and traditional antivirus solutions may not fully protect against unpatched vulnerabilities. Organizations can extend support through the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which is available until October 13, 2026, but requires annual payments at increasing costs—75% of license cost in the first year, 100% in the second, and 125% in the third. Microsoft’s recommended path is to migrate to newer platforms such as Windows Server 2022 or move workloads to Azure, where free ESUs are available for up to three years after end of support.
