Can I charge my AirPods on a wireless charger?
Yes, MagSafe case AirPods will charge on a Qi charger. Non-MagSafe case AirPods will even charge on a MagSafe charger, they just won't stick to it.

AirPods with a wireless or MagSafe charging case charge with any and all Qi certified charger. If you have a MagSafe case, place the case in the middle of a MagSafe charger facing upward with the status indicator light for the best and most efficient charging experience.

I'm closing in on buying my second airpods, my airpods 1 is nearing the end of its life after a year and half of usage.
I believe my only wireless charging capable devices is my Apple watch S3. My iPhone 7 plus and iPad don't support wireless charging. Currently I don't have a wireless charging mat either.
So is it necessary to get wireless charging case version of airpods 2? Currently I have no plans to upgrade my iPhone to a wireless charging capable one. However I find it annoying to bring three different charging cables on my business trip and that's why I was thinking about getting one wireless charging device for all my Apple devices.

Your iPhone cable will work fine to charge the regular Gen2’s. It’s just a Lightning port. If you don’t have any Qi chargers, I would say it’s probably worth it to save the money and get the non-wireless.
