Hi neighbours! I would like to find the best over-ear headphones that have noise-cancelling enough to eliminate/significantly reduce the SkyTrain noise while commuting.
I just replaced my 1More Sonoflow and the quality of the new pair is extremely disappointing. I've come to accept that I just need to pay the big bucks to get top of the line.
...but it's not like I can test them out on the train as it's grinding over the tracks. As such, I thought I'd ask for your personal anecdotes!
Music/audio quality almost doesn't matter; it's the noise-cancelling that's the primary concern here (but I'd like to still listen to audiobooks).

I went through this hunt recently and here are my findings: Sennheiser Momentum 4 (best sound quality for music, best battery life by far, relatively small earcup makes it tricky to get a good fit right away with my size ears, feels lower quality than the Sony XM5 in hand, intuitive touch controls for playback and noise cancelling settings) Sony WH-1000XM5 (aka XM5) (best noise cancelling but disappointing sound quality for music, big ear cup so very high initial comfort for my ears, feels high quality in the hand, earcups stick out from the head really far which looks odd on me, relies on more physical buttons than the Sennheiser) Bose QuietComfort (good balance of noise cancelling and sound quality but costs more, poor initial comfort on my ears) Apple Airpods Max (great noise cancelling and sound quality but highest price -out of my consideration due to budget and not being in the Apple ecosystem) Highly recommend trying them on in the store for comfort before you buy. I also recommend checking out refurbished models from Best Buy at the same time as a sale is on. I went with the Sennheisers (because battery life and sound quality were my highest priority) and saved $150. edit: Honourable mention to the Sony XM4 which is the cheapest of all these options, folds compact for travel, has better bass than the XM5 and the earpads are thicker and more plush than the XM5 or Momentum 4.
