Wolverine fancasts are like buttholes—everybody’s got one. The problem with most of them is that they usually boil down to how tall, buff or grizzled the actor is.
Let’s be real: Nobody looks like Logan.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, we can look at recasting Wolverine from a whole new perspective. Movie magic can manipulate height, and modern prosthetics are crazy good. Look at Colin Farrell as the Penguin. He is totally unrecognizable in the role and so all we see on screen is talent. Audiences are drawn deeper into the Penguin's story because Farrell and the makeup team have made it believable. Nobody looks like him—not even the actor who plays him.
Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, Heath Ledger as the Joker, Charlize Theron as Aileen Wuornos, John Hurt as the Elephant Man. These are castings that worked not because the actors looked the part, but because they were able to channel their characters energy and soul. Prosthetics would greatly broaden the talent pool when finding the next Wolverine.
What matters most shouldn’t be an actor's height or ability to grow thick mutton chops…or even to get into insane physical shape. The things that should matter most are passion for the character, chemistry with the cast, and the ability to make us believe that this man has lived through a torturous century of pain, love, rage...and is the very best at what he does.
Yes, the makeup chair and wearing prosthetics all day for weeks and months can be brutal. But many fans are wanting Marvel to dial Wolverine back to a more reserved role to put the spotlight on other X-Men this time anyway. If Logan shows up only when it counts, not only would it make his appearances more meaningful and impactful, but the actor also wouldn't have to dread the process as much if they are only playing the part every couple of years or so. (A truckload of money also helps.)
So, with appearance no longer prioritized as highly, who are your unexpected casting ideas for Logan? Are there any popular or controversial fancasts that would be improved with prosthetics? Or should Marvel make a new star and cast an unknown like they have done before?
