Anyone buy a JCrew wedding dress?

uninspired this season
No, they seem to be getting further from their roots every season. So many items are cropped and only available in weird trendy colors. Gold buttons everywhere. It’s really disappointing. More on reddit.com

How do I dress like a J. Crew catalog without the J. Crew price?
I would suggest going through those images and seeing what kind of specific pieces you might want to achieve that look, then start looking for cheaper versions of those. I find that a lot less overwhelming than trying to find a cheaper store with the exact same image/style. Here are a couple of specific items I would check out: Button up shirts - Old Navy Bright coloured flats - H&M Pull-over sweaters (simple or mildly embellished) - The Gap (wait until they have one of their "extra 30% off all clearance" events. The stuff on the clearance rack gets pretty cheap. Printed dresses and pants - Forever 21 More on reddit.com

Hi.

Trying to build a (first-time!) "grown-up" wardrobe. Still very much on a shoestring, debt-ridden student budget, so trying to be smart about it.

I found some blazers I liked on JCrew -- they are a bit heavy material i.e. more wool, so I wanted to ask: how many blazers do you keep on rotation for your work wardrobe? What outerwear do you need for outfit variety and to not look like you are repeating things? Is JCrew too "first internship" and do I need to upgrade to more adult brands? (Sezane, Veronica Beard, etc. those types of things)

I think the JCrew blazers are nice, but are more wool-heavy blazers only for winter? (What is the difference between winter-only, spring/summer-only, and all-season blazers?)

How do you balance quality material vs. budget? Super grateful for any suggestions you may have! other brands, shopping strategies, etc.

And for JCrew specifically, what are the best times to buy? I know they mark-up enormously, and then "slash" prices for sales, but what are the best sales? Other than Black Friday, is July 4th sale etc. good too? Please help -- thanks!

What industry are you working in and do you have an actual dress code from your employer? So many industries that have tended to be quite formal and conservative have relaxed their standards around dress dramatically in the last few years, so it’s important for you to really understand what the specific current expectations of your industry (and niche, and employer) are. If you have started your job already, what are people in management wearing? I don’t think brand is important unless you’re in an industry where brand is important and people take notice. Fit is probably going to be the top factor in whether or not your workwear looks professional and polished. Good fabrics and construction are also important, but you don’t have to go to expensive brands to get those (and expensive brands don’t guarantee those.) Unless you’re lucky enough to find things that fit very well off the rack (which is ideal), I would save some of my budget for tailoring (which can be quite expensive for structured and lined garments, like blazers). What are winter and summer like for you? Your climate will have a big impact on what you should wear in different seasons, and may also impact what is considered appropriate professional wear. Wool can be an excellent year around fabric, though not all wool garments are going to be appropriate or comfortable for all seasons. If you’re looking at blazers and not matching suits then I’m guessing you’re not dressing for the highest level of formality. I would lean towards unlined blazers for the summer, and year round if you can. They’ll be lighter and cooler, and lots of unlined blazers can be machine washed, while lined blazers generally need to be dry cleaned. If you do end up with lined blazers in your wardrobe make sure that you have a dry cleaning budget and also invest in a garment steamer. If you don’t need high formality I would suggest looking for unlined blazers and pants made out of ponte fabric. It’s super comfortable, easy to care for, and structured enough that it makes great work wear. My suggestion for anyone on a tight budget would be to go to a variety of stores in person and try on a bunch of stuff. Figure out what sizes work for you, what cuts and styles work on your body, and note what various fabrics feel like to touch and how they drape on your body. Then buy some stuff second hand. Thrift locally if that makes sense or look on eBay or Poshmark. The shift away from formal work wear and the work from home trend means there’s a huge amount of nice work wear on the used market for barely any money. You can get really high quality, high MSRP garments for SHEIN prices, and then spend some money on tailoring and dry cleaning or just have more options in your wardrobe. I don’t know about the best time to shop JCrew, but they have sales often enough that I would never pay full price for anything unless I loved it so much that I would be filled with regret if I missed out.

Hey, as someone who built a 'grown up' wardrobe to find herself working in relatively casual settings - do you have a job lined up and if yes, are you mimicking the office style? Based on what I know of the working world and the industries I've been in, I keep one blazer at a time (in the current style - so I've acquired one looser fit in the last few years) and I use it exclusively for interviews and new job day 1 (where I gauge the dress code and inevitably find that a sweater and slacks will do). In the last 12 years, I have primarily worn casual, up to business casual, to work, and have never needed to wear a blazer. Just letting you know as I understand, being a formerly broke student myself, how much a grown up wardrobe can cost.

r/FrugalFemaleFashion on Reddit: How do I dress like a J. Crew catalog without the J. Crew price?
December 17, 2014 -

Hi guys! I'm halfway through my first year of college and am in desperate need of a new wardrobe. I just started a fantastic job working for a company based on Wall Street and even though the attire in the office is casual, I need to revamp my style from sweatshirts and faded jeans to something a bit more sophisticated.

As you can guess, I live in New York which isn't the best budget friendly place to shop. Even the local Goodwill's in my area are crazy expensive. I've always been in love with the whole J. Crew/Banana Republic look (example 1, 2) but have never had the money to buy any of it.

I was wondering if anyone had any websites, brands, or style suggestions that could help make this look a little bit more achievable. I also would really like some tips on how to make this fashion look cute, young, and fresh. If anyone has any recommendations for thrift stores/discount shops in the NYC area, I would really appreciate that too!

I'm frugal but not a fashionista just yet, haha. Thanks so much guys!

Why J Crew Wedding Dress? - Weddingbee-Boards
January 2, 2014 - The dress that you mention is a strapless sweetheart shiffon gown. I tried it on but decided that I did not want to have to wear a strapless bra on my wedding day, so it was not for me. You might also want to try out the Taryn gown or the Nadia gown. If you have a J. Crew near you that has the gowns in stock you should make an appointment to go to try them on.
