I am looking to buy a fireplace for the yard. However, I am torn between a wood burning or a gas one. Gas is cleaner, I get propane tanks and there is no ash or sparks flying to worry about. However, I am not sure if it will generate enough heat as a wood burning pit. I need both of them to be portable/movable so I can put it to the side when not in use. There are a ton of choices for either option.
For each of them I have the following questions --
Gas fireplace--
-
How expensive is gas compared to wood? Am I even correct in assuming wood is cheaper?
-
Can a gas fireplace generate as much heat as a wood burning one?
-
What specs should I look at? The description says BTUs and am not sure how many BTUs are needed and how that maps to the heat it produces or the area it covers.

How do you deal with the ash? Should I remove this immediately after use or do you do it after it accumulates a bit? Here, I am thinking of ash flying around after use. Is it ok to throw it in trash?
-
It takes some time to start the fire and there could be smoke too. How much should it factor into the decision?
-
How much of this maintenance should I factor in?
Anything else?
