Now that live edge shelves have already passed into the dated trend phase, my wife would like some small live edge or fake live edge shelves along the wall. Considering it is only a handful of 10 inch shelves and nothing massive, I was thinking of grabbing a budget carving disc to cut into some of the leftover wormy maple I have lying around. The problem is that all I see are $12 questionable amazon company carving discs and the $150+ arbortech premium stuff, with not a lot in the middle. I'd like to avoid using just a sanding disc, which will probably make for too much roundover, but I'm at a loss with the search. Any recommendations?

After doing a bunch of research, I found that the 2 most recommended options seem to be either Kutzall carving discs, or Arbortech stuff. Both not cheap, but it looks like you get what you pay for. I haven't decided what I'm going to buy yet so I can't recommend a specific model.

So I tried one of the half donut shaped carving wheels from HF that has pieces of carbide embedded in it. I usually don't like the cutting tools or sand paper from HF, but this carving wheel is one great abrasive tool. It cut all that wood away and is still sharp enough to do it again.

so i i guess i didn't do as much research as i should have. I bought a 40 dollar grinder and now im seeing carving discs are twice that price. Can nothing be done with normal grinding discs? It came with 5. Not sure i want to invest another 60 or so on a kutzall carving disc. ugh. May be returning this for now. I already have a dremel but wanted to do bigger pieces

Harbor freight has a couple different power carving wheels. One with teeth and a chainsaw wheel. The chainsaw wheel is frightening, but the toothed carbide wheel is well worth the money in my opinion.

I love my chain discs. You can get 5 for like $30 on Amazon under the brand SUNFUL. Getting used to them takes a minute. Like a solid hour and then you can do just about anything. I use mine for bowls and I stack two discs for moving more material out of my way

Has anyone used the chainsaw type wheels for angler grinders or other attachments for wood carving/shaping? Any thoughts or suggestions? I've got a 5" x 14" chunk of pine branch I would like to make into a holder for 3 candles and I thought this might be a way to go.

I use one for roughing work. Cool, but dangerous. Have to be focused. Depending on how much material you want to remove, low grit flap discs might be a better option. Much less aggressive/dangerous, but can remove quite a bit quickly. Grab some harbor freight discs, they work fine for me

Stumpy Nubs almost literally became Stumpy Nubs from that chainsaw attachment. I fear it after his video about his injury . As a first time carver, I spent the money on the Turbo Plane blade. Feels much safer (relatively).
