Planning a dining table for 6. Tips and advice/wood sourcing help.
Based on your color criteria, it sounds like you want either walnut with some sapwood. Or maybe cherry. I'm not sure if you can get exactly what you're looking for without some coloring... The downside is that walnut and cherry can be a little pricey. Where to NOT buy wood: Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, et al. Too damn pricey. Where you SHOULD buy wood: find a hardwood lumber yard. Good chance you won't even find them online. YellowPages to the rescue. This is highly dependent on where you live. What state? Cost: Cherry, walnut, and other nice woods are a little expensive. Also, you're typically not buying boards. You're buying board-feet, which is volume. 12"x12"x1" = 1 bf. I prefer to compute the volume in inches and then divide by 144 to turn that into BF. Thicker wood is typically sold at a higher cost per bf, just because it's harder to dry, store, and generally handle that thin stuff. Assuming 78" x 40" table top and 2" thick, that would give you about 44 BF. Buy some extra to let you line up your glue up for a better, more pleasing grain match. Plus there's always waste. So maybe 50-55 BF. Why 2" thick? Obviously, you can adjust this down to suit a style. I prefer to get thicker wood and plane to thickness. Plus rough sawn stuff always finishes a few sixteenths thinner. I'd personally buy 8/4 for most dining tables. So then 55 BF of 8/4. My preferred lumber yard has that at $9.35 for walnut, $4.95 for cherry. Walnut blows your budget ($514 before tax) and cherry is right on target ($272.) Next, I would not do pocket holes. Not for a dining table. Really, not for any kind of table. I would strongly recommend using mortise and tenon for the frame. All you need, beside some careful layout and measuring, is a chisel and mallet for the mortise and a saw for the tenon. As you probably don't have excellent mortise chisels, it might be easier to drill out most of the waste and then clean up with chisels. But it's really up to you. And finally, don't screw the top to the frame. If you do this, the top will expand and contract with seasonal changes and destroy itself. You need to let the top move as it wants to. There exist fasteners that allow this. Or you can make cabinet makers buttons. More on reddit.com

Need help finding a dining table for 5/6 people. Space is 10ftx10ft
Round is the way to go for this space and you can still found one with leaves. I got mine 3 years ago from Ashley Furniture. Go into the store because they’ll knock a few hundred dollars off. I would like it but it’s counter height. You have an absolutely gorgeous home! More on reddit.com

Dining Room Table and 6 Chairs
Looks really clean. Any pics of it from underneath? Any particular reason you ran the boards across the width instead of down the length? Nice work,. thanks for sharing More on reddit.com

r/woodworking on Reddit: Planning a dining table for 6. Tips and advice/wood sourcing help.
April 30, 2015 -

I have a handy background and many carpenters/tradesmen in the family but I'm looking to make my first piece of furniture. A dining table for 6.

My wife wants a dark colored wood for the tabletop and a white wooden frame. I'm mostly looking for advice on sourcing the wood for the tabletop. I would like a type of wood that has contrast with medium-lighter colors and dark colors mixed. But I'm not looking to spend a lot of money ($500 total budget for the project) and I'm not sure where to get the wood. Would love to recycle something if I could.

Also I was told to look at pocket joining jigs for the frame but I want to use 4x4 posts for the legs and jigs that can do that seem really pricey and I'm not sure how much furniture I'm going to be doing in the future.

Here is my table I built based off the Ana white design.. Only difference is I used real mortise and tenon and real breadboard ends instead of pocket holes...this hole project cost me less than $120 and it was all done with construction grade lumber ...if you take your time if that wood can look great ..hope this helps...and if u have any questions let me know (Edit) Here is the Ana white table plans I based mine off of

The 7 Best Dining Tables of 2026 | Reviews by Wirecutter
2 days ago - I ran my fingertips wherever the average diner might interact with a table — along the tabletop, legs, and apron (a wood or metal piece under the tabletop) — to assess how these areas felt. With help from staffers and paid testers, I compared each table’s stated seating capacity to what it actually felt like to sit at with the specified number of people. And I considered how diners of different heights, ages, and abilities would interact with the table. In addition to aprons, I checked for support bars, crossbeams, and any bracing that might interfere with the chairs and legs of those dining.
