If it hasn't been available for 100 years, I'd think hard before trying it. At least on the actual old stuff. I do cheat - I use blue dawn dish soap on my floors and plenty of other stuff too. Glass cleaner is ammonia based or you can do vinegar based, just get the cheapest spray bottle and it'll be fine. Just don't get it on the wood. Beeswax is a classic for a reason. If you're talking wood floors, get rugs. Wood floors are not supposed to be left completely bare. Never completed a restoration project before so please forgive if this is a silly question.
I have a few wooden dressers I’d like to restore. I’ve watched several YouTube videos to see what the best product is for a quick surface clean prior to any stripping sanding etc.
I’d like to use something safe for older wood and something I have already have laying around the house, if possible.
I’ve seen people use simple green and dawn dish soap/water. Which one of these do you prefer? If not, is there something else that would be good?
Edit: Bonus random newbie question
Are dressers with dovetail drawers something I should avoid for my first project? I don’t want to ruin anything too valuable

not a silly question at all it’s actually one of the most common ones people ask before starting their first restoration. both simple green and dawn + water can work, but they’re really more for surface-level degreasing than actual wood conditioning. simple green can be a bit strong if you’re dealing with older or unfinished wood, while dawn is gentler but doesn’t really do much to nourish or protect the surface. in order to wipe off grime before sanding, a mild mix of warm water + a few drops of dish soap + a microfiber cloth is totally fine. but once you’ve cleaned it, i’d definitely lean toward using something like a conditioning oil/wax combo after it does two things: - helps rehydrate and protect the wood so it doesn’t dry out or crack after cleaning - brings out that natural color and grain that makes restored pieces look rich instead of chalky Please make sure you join the community before posting a comment and upvote the post in question as well.
