r/BeginnerWoodWorking on Reddit: Wood for Outdoor Table Top?
August 29, 2024 -

I’m looking to make a simple outdoor table top (I already have some stainless steel legs) and I was astonished by the lack of outdoor suitable wood options… what are you all doing for outdoor furniture?

I can get cedar for $7.70 per board foot for rough cut, but even that is like $400 of lumber just for an 8’ table top.

EDIT: For those downvoting both me and the commenters… why? What about this wood species selection post has offended you? Please just downvote me and not the kind folks responding. Thanks!

r/BeginnerWoodWorking on Reddit: 8x3 Outdoor table table plans. Anything you would change?
June 2, 2025 -

I'd like to build an outdoor table and this is the rough material list/plans I have so far.

Tabletop: 1x6 cedar with a bordered edge. I'll be using the slat design to allow water to easily pass through when it rains.

Table frame: Pressure treated 2x4's

Legs: Pressure treated 4x4's

A few questions I have:

1.) Is the 1 inch tabletop thickness going to be too thin?

2.) Is pressure treated lumber for the frame and legs not a good idea? I'm totally cheaping out because cedar is already pretty expensive. The tabletop alone will cost about $150. With PT lumber, I guess another con is that it's non very pretty and probably won't take stain very well.

Any comment on my approach before I draw up actual plans? I'm sure there are lol.

July 3, 2015 - 🙂 I used Thompson's WaterSeal wood stain & sealer in Moroccan Brown. I really liked that for this table since it's a one coat coverage! and because I desperately wanted to get this table done and not wait for everything to dry (impatient much? haha). Our new table is so sturdy with the 4x4 legs. I absolutely love it! If you want to build your own, be sure and snag those downloadable plans! Looking for more woodworking plans?

DIY Simple Outdoor Dining Table — the Awesome Orange
December 31, 2019 - Oh and hide stuff I didn’t like… the fun of working with reclaimed wood or barn wood. This build is super simple and a great beginner project. If you use 2x8’s like I did you will need a table saw to rip the base pieces. Or you can just use 2x'4’s for the base and then you will only need a drill, pocket hole jig (I use the Kreg Foreman and love it, but a simple K4 would work just as well) and miter saw to complete this build. Either way it will be AWESOME! So lets it started making you your own DIY Simple Outdoor Dining Table!
