Is installing wood siding panels over house wrap okay?
Planning to replace siding. Should I replace the old wood siding with new sheathing?
Is there an "affordable" type of wood siding that gives this appearance and that can live through snowy winters? (There are many homes in my area that are fairly affordable but that have this style).
Are there any cheaper alternatives to "wood panel siding"?
I’m building a 16x16 and I plan to install house wrap. Originally I was going to install lap siding but I’m reconsidering going to standard engineered wood siding panels like a lot of sheds use. This means I’d have studs, sheathing, wrap, and then the siding panels. Would this be an acceptable approach? Lap siding seems like it would be a lot more breathable compared to the panels so it’s making me think there is some detail I’m missing.
My old house is in dire need of some new siding. On most of the house, the current aluminum siding is sitting directly over the old wood siding that also serves as sheathing. The last addition to the house was sheathed with plywood but housewraped with tar paper. I'm considering several options for residing:
- Add Tyvek over the wood siding, install furring vertically, and nail new vinyl siding to that.
- Remove the old wood siding, install new OSB sheathing, cover that with Tyvek, and nail the new vinyl to that.
- Remove the old wood siding, install Zip sheathing in its place, and nail the vinyl to that.
Just from a really quick estimation, the difference in going with OSB vs the Zip system would be maybe $500 but might save some headache. In that case, the newer addition would still need traditional housewrap. In either case, I think the headache of pulling the old wood off would be offset by the reduction in trim work needed around the windows. It would also allow me to pull the windows and properly flash under them.
I'll be DIY'ing this project along with a roof replacement around the same time. Just looking for an objective opinion from Reddit, or any other options I may not be considering.
