I need my 80 year old wood siding removed and replaced and I’m not sure who to hire. I have received a few quotes so far but they all recommend something different (some push vinyl and the others swear by engineered wood). Prices have varied drastically. The lowest vinyl quote is $9000 and highest so far is $15000 (this is for the exact same product). The engineered wood is quoted at about $5000 more from each company. Does anyone have any suggestions on which company to use or to avoid?
If you can afford it go with the engineered wood. It is much more durable. Also if your house is 80 years old you might want to get them to insulate the skirt of your house. It will make a big difference on your heat bill in winter.
As far as finding contractors ask to see some photos of their work. Go with whoever you think will do the best job. Look at the little details-around the doors, meters and etc.
If I can suggest check out Efficiency MB & Canada Green Homes Grant and add some insulation while your doing the siding. I did that a few years back with both spray in cellulose and xps outside the walls. If your stripping the old siding down to the shiplap, now is the perfect time to do it :) for the insulation I used WarmHome. I don’t have a contractor recommendation for you for siding because I did the vinyl siding myself (with friends). Not hard to do, but time consuming (especially when you don’t realize if you nail nails up or down instead of straight on, it changes the line of the siding and then comes out all goopy and have to pull it back off and start again)
