High density polypropylene cutting boards are non-absorbent, kind to the edge of your knives, can go in the dishwasher, get the shit beaten out of them in professional kitchens and have the benefit of being cheap as hell.
Maybe not the pretty boy at the prom, but ready to party.

The current consensus seems to be three-fold: 1.) Both are fine. 2.) Plastic harbors less when new, wood harbors less when highly used. 3.) The surface type has probably never contributed to more illness. Cross contamination contributing to illness happens regardless of surface type and almost exclusively to amount of material contact when crossing over. So, See Point 1.) Given this, I use wood, any kind including bamboo. I also use plastic because it's dishwasher safe. Bottom line: Use whatever it doesn't matter. Whatever you do use, wash it and let it dry completely before reusing it and you're fine. Pathogens are way, way, way more reliant on water, time, temperature and exposure surface area than surface type. More on reddit.com

Former health inspector here. Unfortunately, there's not really such a thing as a long lasting cutting board. The moment the surface becomes rough, biofilm can form. You can go the commercial kitchen route, and get cutting boards which are 2" thick, then plane off the surface each time it starts to wear out. But, I don't think that it's more cost effective or safer than getting the 2 for $3 super thin flexible cutting boards from IKEA and replacing them frequently. More on reddit.com
