I'm looking to get a new keyboard but the price is a bit high. With delivery, this totals to £183.95 (€214.91 / $233.77).
I still have my previous keyboard that I bought back in 2017 I believe so I assume a wooting keyboard to last a good 5 years. I mainly play fps games like CS2 or COD with other games that probably wouldn't benefit from the rapid trigger functionality. Still, if a high quality keyboard is to last me like 5 years I would be happy to buy it. I don't like to overpay for things that aren't worth it but I've only seen positive reviews about wooting. I wouldn't use the analog functionality for mimicking a controller pressure inputs. Thoughts?
I received my Wooting 2 HE after more than 2.5 months waiting and I have to say, the wait was well worth it.
This keyboard is just different than the rest, the typing experience is amazing... it feels smooth, soft and a bit wet (probably because of the pre-lubed linear switches)... you can say it feels like typing on clouds lol... I had the chance to try the switches of the Apex Pro TKL, which were pretty awesome too, i think they were lighter compared to the lekker switch, however the lekker feel more wet and satisfying to me - keep in mind, i am comparing them only to the other contactless switches i have tried.. no other ordinary switch like MS Red comes even close to this level of smoothness and consistency) The lekker switches have a little bit of wobble and they can probably improve this if they add stabilizers on every switch as Razer does on some of their keyboards, the keys with stabilizers feels like there is almost 0 wobble though)
Aesthetics wise, it looks slick, simplistic modern design with aluminum plate.
If you are into RGB lighting, you are in for a treat.. the lights are really bright but not only that, they actually produce accurate colors, white is white and not purplish like many other keybaords, you can chose pastel colors which look pretty sweet (my friend commented on it and said it looks like a cake awaiting to be eaten hehe).
I ordered the PBT carbon black ANSI keycaps which are ok, nothing special, and I'll probably buy something more interesting for this keyboard in the feature.
I also ordered the black wrist rest which I am not a big fan of, because of two reasons. The thing dose not attach itself to the keyboard, it just feels generic wrist rest for the full sized keyboard - it wouldn't have been a problem if it didn't slide up towards the keyboard if i press it a bit more upwards.. which is annoying and sometimes can get in the way when gaming. The 2nd issue i have with it, is the material.. it's really soft and it almost feels like kashmir which is nice, but it stains my hands a little bit (when you slide your fingers you can almost feel dust on it - because of the very very fine texture i guess) - overall, i'd say ok.. but not very happy with the wrist rest.
This keyboard is the most feature packed keyboard i have seen so far (and not features like media keys or volume scrolls bullshit, but some VERY unique OP stuff).
I will not list all specs, you can check them on Wooting's website, but i'll mention some here...
The keyboard uses hall effect switches called Lekker that can output Analog (emulating xinput controller). You can customize the actuation point on this keyboard from 0.1mm - 4.0mm range (beating all competitors here) with it's Lekker hall effect switches. I found my sweet spot for typing at 2.0mm and for FPS gaming at 1.1mm (lower than that i was making too many mistakes, you can also change the actuation point per key, which is nice for playing games like Overwatch where you wouldn't want to misspress your ult so you can set that at a deeper actuation point.
I am software developer and i've been using the keyboard for about a week now and am more accurate and faster at work with this than any other keyboard (last I used was the HyperX Elite with brown switches) my hands don't tire out and it's just a joy to type on this thing!
For gaming, this keyboard is just amazing... one of the fastest (if not the fastest) keyboard out there.. It also has an option called Tachyon mode which lowers the latency down to ~1.4ms (from 3.4ms) but with this it sacrifices RGB effects (like breathing, ripples, etc) - I turn it on when gaming, but i haven't felt any difference honestly. In addition to it's speed it offers an unique feature called Rapid Trigger (RT) is basically a dynamic actuation point.. when i say dynamic actuation point i mean if your key needs to active at 1.1mm and you bottomed out the key @4.0mm anyways, and now you want to let it go to reactivate the same key, normally you would have to lift off above the activation point back @1.1mm so you can press it again, with RT you can just every so slightly release the key and (0.1mm - also adjustable) press it back again to activate, this REALLY improves the speed of your strafing in FPS games like Overwtch or CSGO when moving left and right vs snipers or in games like Tekken 7 where you need to press the same key twice as fast as possible - this increased my consistency for doing combos in Tekken by a noticeable margin. And it doesn't end there... it has another feature called Dynamic Key Stroke (DKS) - DKS allows you to map up to 4 keys on 1 key based on how far you pressed the Key.. This is awesome in games where you have sprinting in games.. for example i used DKS on my "W" key so when I full press the "W" key i get "LShift+W" to sprint, effectively freeing the LShift! You can set up to 4 different keys per key, when the key goes down 1st key, when the key reaches bottom 2nd key, when the key lifts off the bottom 3rd key and when the key is fully released 4th key.. It's pretty crazy... I refrain from using this feature as it feels like cheating in multiplayer games...
The analog feature let's you use this keyboard as a controller where (downside is not many games support controller + mouse input, so it's sweet in games that allows it, so you could for example slightly press the "W" key to walk slowly and fully to spring, much like using controller stick). For me this feature is not so important but it's there and it works very well - it's precise, but it requires some getting used to, because 4mm range is not that much to work with so you need to be sensitive how much press they keys when in Analog mode) - I don't play Fortnite, but i'v seen people swear for the Wooting that do play it, i think this is worth mentioning for the Fortnite fans to check out (but i guess they already are aware of this KB because it allowed them double movement in Fortnite).
The build quality is nice, it's not a heavy board and you can move it around as you want easily, it's a bit lighter for your everyday mech keyboard but it dose not feel cheap, dose not bend and it's pretty stable on the desk. (the previous keyboard i used the HyperX Elite felt like a fucking tank.. i was struggling when i wanted to readjust the position of the board because it was so tanky heavy...) I like the Wooting build allot more, but honestly it feels like it can be improved a bit for such a premium price but it's not bad at all) - I would like to see what they do with their new upcoming 60% keyboard!
The switches are hot-swappable and they even send you 4 extra switches if you break some by accident to replace them, which is pretty awesome, just keep in mind this keyboard works only with their Lekker switches.
(Their upcoming 60% keyboard will even use a standard case where you can just swap the board inside in your custom case - I expect this sub to fully embrace this keyboard when this thing comes out hehe)
The software is called Wootility and it's such a nice breath of fresh air.. It's just simple, no bloatware and it just works! No bugs so far.. It doesn't even have to stay in the background for you to use your keyboard, you can save everything on the keyboard internal memory and shut it down and everything works. it's intuitive/light and has a modern design.. (Razer/HyperX/Steelseries should take notes here!!!) I love it..
Customer Experience - Well i can't say I am happy with Wooting on this point.. I mean I understand that they are a new startup company competing on a saturated market with the big names.. however, if a Wooting staff reads this, i hope they get it like a constructive feedback where they can improve. From the very start it was a little confusing when i would get my keyboard if i pre-ordered (Yes you have to pre-order this keyboard in advance and sometimes wait 2-4 months for it to arrive and it's not always available) so i was pointed to join their discord where they have volunteers to help. You can imagine how that turned out.. incorrect information about availability, feeling uncertainty if i'll get it in the next month or two or it will be in the next batch scheduled for April, they would post updates in there which were poorly written and sometimes confusing/contradicting.. Even their official customer support made a fuck up and told me that i'll have to wait for April's batch after i ordered where i got told it would arrive before Christmas on their discord channel - the official support was mistaken though, i got it with the 2nd EU batch).. Their official support also messed up my request to use DHL delivery (they confirmed it was DHL already) but in the end the keyboard arrived with the regular post office anyways. For official support it takes about 3-4 days to reply back so it's pretty slow.. at least you can go to their discord and get unofficial help if you need. However, this keyboard is eye watering expensive (I paid 230eur + VAt which turned out almost 270eur - to be fair, this includes the shipping which cost me about 45eur and if you only order just the keyboard it's cheaper ) Anyways, paying such a premium price their customer support certainly does not match that level, i hope they can improve on this point.
Wooting as a company - I like them, allot. The guys are very transparent and honest, they let you know about every step of the process and are open to feedback and you can see them chatting everyday on their Discord server as well. They host twitch streams where you can interact with them and they are transparent on what they are focusing currently.
I'll support them in any way I can because I think they deserve it and I also want to see them grow - would LOVE to have a Wooting keyboard in my local computer store and I don't have to wait months to get one hehe.
To summarize:
Typing experience: Sexy as hell
Gaming experience: Out of this world
Build quality: Very good
Aesthetics: Very good
RGB Lighting: Excellent
Offered keycaps: Ok
Offered wrist rest: Ok
Customizability through software/tech: Nothing even comes close to it on the market currently
Case and board customizability: Not many options offered (the upcoming 60% keyboard looks promising for this!)
Customer experience: Poor
Availability: Bad
p.s. This is my personal experience only and don't get me wrong, even the weak points listed above would not stop me to order once again if i had to - the keyboard is just amazing and for me it outweighs the negatives.
edit: wording
edit2: After 1 day of this post, Wooting apparently released a tool on their website - Product Status page. Where we can quickly see the latest status of orders, overview all the product stock status, batches, and estimated delivery dates (all this was done poorly so far through Discord - this should indeed improve the customer experience for future buyers)
Thanks a lot for your detailed post on this. I'm surprised you haven't had more feedback!
I'm in a bit of a strange situation... I have a Logitech G510 from 2010, that has been great... but I like FPS and use the number pad. I prefer that because forward, left and right are all in the same line... which makes a whole lot more sense than having left and right in line with backwards :)
The G510 is a membrane keyboard and I see that a lot of people don't even consider these any more, but it is quiet, comfortable, has simple back-lighting and media controls (I use volume daily... even if it is buggy!). My 6 key is lower than the others and the 4 is beginning to stick, not bad for 12 years though! I'm hoping to see a nice improvement when I upgrade to mechanical, but I'm not sure if it's just word of mouth repeating that mechanical is much better... we'll see :)
Anyway, I was looking at this keyboard, and it really seems to tick every box. I've tested switches and linear seems good for me, and to be able to configure the actuation point is just great.
Then I read about the wrist rest... I bought and tried a Hyper X Alloy (I think it was called!) and had to return it because they didn't make a rest for it... and the keys were so much higher. How can a keyboard be better for you if your wrist is not straight!? It's an immediate negative, no matter how good the keyboard is.
I see this one does not attach and, as mentioned, I use numpad for my preferred game and also do coding so I am constantly moving the keyboard. How do you feel about it now after a month? Is it always a bit of a problem, or are their alternatives to help solve it? e.g. generic rests, maybe magnetic tape or even gluing them together!
The next batch comes in April and I'm wondering between this or just trying the Apex pro... but that seems like a waste to me as the numpad is just normal switches. Any custom keyboard lacks media controls, but this one at least has function + media control with the detail on the key caps.
Anyway, your long post deserved a long reply, so if you get your notification please let me know how it's been over the past month - Thanks :)
did you change your keycaps again?
Looks like I should have checked this forum first.
I am expecting the Wooting Two HE keyboard to arrive this week. I ordered the keyboard, despite the switches not being boxed. But with all the issues I have seen in this forum lately, the odds that I get a faulty product seem high.
When I buy a $150+ mechanical keyboard, I expect all the switches to be properly seated. There is no way that you can call a keyboard a quality keyboard, if this isn't the case. I am already annoyed that Wooting don't use boxed switches to reduce keycap wobble. So if the switches aren't properly seated ...
I really hope the unit I receive will be ok, because I am not the type of person that RMA's a product. I either return it or throw it out, because I simply don't want to spend my time on RMA, if the QC is low to begin with.
If you own the keyboard, what is your experience with the quality of the Wooting HE?
i have bought the wooting 60he+, ty all for the help!
btw coming in mid april so i dont even have to wait that long, epic
ive only had my keyboard now (keychron c2) for about a year, i dont know if i should get a new one because i want to take gaming more seriously and not have my parents kill me for my keyboard being too loud, i dont know if its worth getting a new keyboard yet though, do you think i should get a new keyboard now or wait till wooting releases a new 100% keyboard later on and buy that?
thank you if you respond to this!
edit- if i do buy it, im in the UK so how long should i expect it to ship
