I first started sharpening knives with whetstones, but now I’m thinking of getting an electric belt sharpener like the Work Sharp Ken Onion to fix serious chips on knives. Has anyone used the Ken Onion machines? What are your thoughts on them?
Main Question:
Does a motor given too much voltage instantly die (in a matter of seconds)?
I don't know anything about electrical motors and what not. Since it is a sharpener I'm hoping some here have some knowledge on this, even though it ain't for the 'purist' knife sharpeners.
What happened:
Got a Ken Onion Knife Sharpener (just think of a belt sander)(made for American 110V sources) for use in Malaysia (220-240V wall plugs).
Plugged in and turned it on. Ran for 2 seconds before cutting out.
Couldn't get it to run. Checked online and realised my folly with the wrong voltage.
Is it an instant goner? There was no popping sound, no weird smell. No heat whatsoever. I know it could have fused (if there is a fuse in it), or (hopefully) some other protective mechanism kicked in. I'm now waiting for a step down converter to see if the thing is truly wrecked.
I know this is very situation specific but I'm hoping for some insight and understanding of the issue. My understanding of this is likely flawed everywhere.
