r/sharpening on Reddit: Work Sharp Ken Onion vs Ken Onion Mk2
August 2, 2024 -
What are the main differences with Work Sharp Ken Onion and Ken Onion Mk2 sharpeners? I can't find Mk2 version anywhere in Europe and I was thinking to get that first version instead of waiting until I can find Mk2.
Anyone have tested both? Opinions about both? Benefits of Mk2 over first version? And should I just wait until Mk2 will be available?
Going to get blade grinding attachement as I've read it gives you more options about sharpening.

Mark 2 is just a bit easier to use. Instead of a wheel on the trigger to control speed, there is a button to push with a light readout showing the speed. The wheels on the grinding attachment can be adjusted to give you more or less slack on your convex edge. You can adjust the angle into .5 increments. The 90 plate on the grinding attachment is adjustable. Overall I do like it better than the original.

Ahh, got it. It was your wording of the question which confused me. Pretty much agree with the analysis already given. I used the original KO w/BGA for years and loved it, but the New KO MK.2 wBGA is quieter with smoother running belts that have less vibration. It also has a slower speed than the original and has 3 easily roller adjustments, one closer together than the original allowing close to a flat bevel. Other improvements, but those are my priorities.. Only downside IMO is the plastic shroud covering the new blade grinding attachment that comes with the MK.2. Makes installing and removing belts a bit fiddly unfortunately. I've learned to live with it because of the other upgrades. Worth the extra money and time to wait depending on your priorities.
Work Sharp - Standard Edition or Ken Onion Edition? - General Recreation Discussion - NJ Woods & Water
I know there were a few threads talking about the Work Sharp where most people love it for sharpening their knives, so I'm going to get one and try it out. Question: For those that have the Work Sharp (especially if you used both the Ken Onion edition and the standard one), is the KO edition wort... More on njwoodsandwater.com

Updated WorkSharp Ken Onion MK.2
As a follow up, here are my 1st impressions. To cut to the chase, its a keeper! Like the difference between a Ford and a Cadillac I believe they used to say. Both do the same thing, just in a different way. The new WS has much less vibration and the rollers supported on both sides make all the belts run truer without flutter and with much less noise. Didn’t expect that honestly, but it simply makes sharpening much less stressful without the noise/vibration.Had to learn a way to release the belt tensioner lever because the spring is so strong. Finally figured it out by putting my left hand ‘behind/at the head’ of the BGA and then pushing the lever with my thumb. That used to be a one hand job, but at least for me, no more. Still adapting to routing the belts, especially the thin/flexible ones. I’ll get it, but for now requires me to bend to the right to see what I’m doing because of the narrow available path to slide the belt into. All the new gadgets work as advertised including the moveable large roller. Absolutely love the flatter bevel profile I can now get in the 3rd roller position not available on the original! Another big plus is that there is now a metal ‘platen’ on the backside allowing absolutely flat grinding on things like scissors. A big plus for me! I had to install a piece of leather on the original to take up some space because of belt flex at that area. No longer necessary as the belt runs cleanly directly against the platen.I also used the new V shaped sharpener with the guide off to sharpen some hedge clippers and found the same characteristics as the BGA, quite with less vibration and better belt tension. Works great. More on reddit.com

Work Sharp Ken Onion Knife & Tool Sharpener Comparison: Mk. 1 vs. Mk. — Sharpening Supplies
October 17, 2024 - One of the first things you’ll notice about the Mk. 2 is its refined design and build quality. While the original Ken Onion was reliable, it had a few limitations, especially with its sharpening guides. The Ken Onion Edition Mk. 1 featured plastic guides that were functional but sometimes felt less refined.

Work Sharp Releases the Ken Onion Edition MK.2 Sharpening System
July 29, 2025 - My knife was hair-popping sharp in three-quarters the time it used to take with the MK.1. The MK.1 was an incredible system, and I used it exclusively for years. However, the MK.2 takes the entire operation to the next level. I’ve known Ken Onion for many years and can attest that he’s a mad genius when it comes to innovation.

August 20, 2016 - The only way i recommend the work sharp is the Ken onion with blade grinding attachment. It's the easiest one to use imo, you have more control over steel removal, the amount of convex created, and is less likely to create a recurve or round the top.

The tool ships with a kit of several different grit belts, so you start with low grit belt for profiling and then a medium to sharpen and a fine grit to hone – just like a regular knife sharpener.
