First, there is a lot of bad info out there that will misguide you. Read the double bevel guide in the wiki here, and watch the JKI videos. Stick with that info. Second, you can flatten your king deluxe on your sidewalk. Third, once you have a burr, use light pressure edge leading passes only, sweeping motion from tip to heel, heel to tip. Identify which direction the burr is flipped towards and keep the burr facing down on the stone. Check often, when the burr flips, flip the blade. Once the burr is gone, use a handful of sweeping edge trailing passes, light pressure, alternating sides. Then move to the ceramic. Increase your angle at least a few degrees. Use sweeping edge leading passes, light pressure. Only a few per side. Move to the leather. Strop, light pressure, matching original angle, only a few passes per side. Being able to identify the burr even when it is very small is critical here. Magnification helps. Answer from Vaugith on reddit.com

Question on sharpening with Work Sharp Elite
How many times did you do each side? It looks like your angle of 20deg might be shallower than the angle of the knife's bevel. 400 grit is rough, let's be clear on that, but it still doesn't remove steel nearly as fast as you might be imagining. You won't get an entirely new bevel on a new very different angle after just a few strokes on 400 grit. If I am right, this is not the learning curve for your tool, this is the learning curve for sharpening with any tools, including freehand on whetstones. More on reddit.com

You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. ... I got a Work Sharp Ken Onion w/ blade ginder attachment. Set it up last night and in a few hours I have 5 knives that will shave hair. Pretty impressive, considering I don't think I ever sharpened a knife to shaving sharp in my life. More on rokslide.com

r/sharpening on Reddit: How do I sharpen on the Work Sharp Field Sharpener?
October 29, 2021 -

Knife: Ontario Rat II Aus-8
Equipment: Work Sharp Field Sharpener with coarse and fine diamond plates, coarse and fine ceramic rods, strop

I'm a sharpening novice trying to get my knife at least acceptably sharp. I've bought a Work Sharp Field Sharpener to use. I also have a King 1000 water stone, but it's pretty dished from previous tries and I don't have the resources to flatten it.

I've researched a lot of techniques online, a lot you've probably already seen, but it's all kind of left my confused. On the Work Sharp, I've tried to raise a burr on both sides of the knife on the coarse plate, and I think I've been able to do that. After that, though, I'm not sure how to proceed, because I can't seem to get it as sharp as it used to be even after getting a burr. I've tried doing lighter and lighter passes on the fine stone, and then using the ceramic rods.

My question is, can anyone give me an idea of what procedure I should use to sharpen my knife on the Work Sharp Field? I've looked up videos about it, but they all seem to assume a greater knowledge than I have. If anyone coul walk me through what I need to do to successfully sharpen on this kit, I'd greatly appreciate it, because I feel like I'm stuck with learning.

Use the coarse plate on side A till you have a burr over the entire length. Test every 2 or 3 passes. Use the coarse plate on side B till you have a burr over the entire length. Again... test every 2 or 3 passes. Do 1 gentle, soft swipe on side A on the coarse plate and feel if the burr is gone on both sides over the entire length. If not, do another gentle swipes. The idea here is to remove the burr on both sides. Now switch to the fine plate... do 3 passes on side A then 3 passes on side B. Then 2 passes on side A, 2 passes on side B. Then 3 sets of 1 pass on side A and 1 pass on side B. So A B, A B, A B. The idea here is to refine the edge and remove the scratches from the coarse plate. Do NOT form a burr. Then repeat the same pattern of the fine plate on the strop, without applying pressure. Then your knife ought to pop hairs.

I saw how they sharpen knives in India, and now I do it myself at home, even old knives become razor sharp in just one minute.
1 week ago - The beauty of what I saw in India is that the principle works with any abrasive surface. A simple water stone or even a basic pull-through sharpener can apply the same ideas of angle and consistency. How do I know if my knife is actually sharp?Try slicing a sheet of paper hanging in the air, or cutting a ripe tomato without pressing down.

r/sharpening on Reddit: Question on sharpening with Work Sharp Elite
September 10, 2024 -

Noob acknowledgement

Practicing in my new Work Sharp Precision Adjust Elite I locked my Civivi Elementum in, set the angle for 20°, and I started with the 400 grit. I alternated sides, averaging 10-15 strokes per Tri-brassive side plus ceramic. I didn't feel much of a burr forming. You can see the results in the pics. The blade feels sharper but I lack an objective measurement.

After using the leather strop in pulls towards me from the heel to the tip of the blade the blade had a lot of the green, external layer from the tool stuck to the blade. I had to clean it up to get the photos.

Am I missing something fundamental that shows up in the photos or is this just part of my learning to use the tools?

Thanks for the responses.
