It’s 40 hours a week, at a desk, in an office. Rarely seen them wfh. The work itself is simple just administrative computer and calling / rarely emailing clients. Execution of tasks is expected to be extremely accurate. You’re unable to complete trades or recommend anything which has pros and cons depending where you are in your career. You can reach out to any office nearby and the BOA would likely be happy to talk about the job. Lots of support among BOAs. The work has some fairly complex computer applications to learn but training is good.

I am an Advisor at Edward Jones. What I would say is that every FA operates differently, but the BOA keeps the office moving. The role is an administrative role, which the difference was always described to me as "the FA handles sales, the BOA handles service." The FA is to go find clients, while the BOA will be there for the client's needs. It will open doors for further advancement however, so if you are looking to advance a career, it's a good role to start in. Hopefully that helps and best of luck with the interview!

I would agree with the note about trying to meet regional leader or local advisors. That said I also want to make a note that your long term goal of wanting to be a CFP may actually hurt your chances of being hired as a BOA if you are too vocal about it. The person who would be hiring you as their BOA (a financial advisor) rarely wants to hire someone who already has their eye on the exit. To them that just means they will have to hire and train you just to have to do that again for someone new when you get a “lay of the land”. Not saying this is not an admirable goal, but know that it may be viewed negatively. Now on the other hand… if you want to be a CFP, but have interest in always being 2nd chair (ie not going out and getting your own clients) that could make you very attractive for an office that is very large/profitable and needs more licensed support. On that note, what is your goal for when you get the CFP? Want to run your own practice or just be in a support role?

If you are in still in school it’s a good way. You get to add something on your resume and see if the career path is right for you. If you’re not in school there are better ways. You won’t be licensed and can’t do any of the planning stuff.

This position will be phasing out in 2025. It’s designed for part time employment in secretarial type work. Yes, there is absolutely room for growth here though if you’re just looking to get your toes wet and see if you like it.
