How Do I Keep Over Ear Workout Headphones Clean?
The simple answer is to wipe them down and make sure they dry out after each use. Hard surfaces of headphones can be gently cleaned with antibacterial wipes. “The earpads and headband pad are designed to handle sweat and heavy use,” says Ricci, explaining that in most cases they can be easily removed for cleaning, “or replaced over time to keep the headphones fresh and hygienic, which is ideal for consistent workout use.”

How Heavy Is Too Heavy For Workout Headphones?
The answer is different from person to person, but in general, the lighter a pair of headphones is, the better they are for working out. Make sure you choose a pair that suits your body. “As you’re working out, improper headphones tend to get in the way of your body,” says Lee. “I’ve witnessed clients walking in with neck strain, knotted shoulders, and even headaches from just a pair of heavyweight or ill-fitting headphones.” Try to keep the total weight below 10 ounces.

How Does Noise Canceling In Headphones Work?
Noise-canceling headphones use what’s called active noise cancellation, also known as ANC, to block out much of the unwanted ambient sound by generating sound waves that are the opposite of those noises. Noise-canceling headphones use tiny microphones that constantly monitor the surrounding environment, picking up on the frequencies of ambient noises. The headphones then create a second set of sound waves that are the exact opposite frequency, and these opposite frequencies get played through the headphones, largely blocking the outside noise out.

Best Earbuds and Headphones for Workouts and the Gym in 2025 - CNET
November 11, 2025 - The main reason not get these is that you simply want a more premium noise-canceling headphone that not only offers better build quality but better overall performance along with more advanced features like ear-detection sensors, LDAC audio codec support and Sony's Quick Attention and Speak-To-Chat features. Sony also leaves out any sort of carrying case or pouch with these headphones, which is slightly disappointing. ... Before anything else, you'll want to figure out how much you're willing to spend on new workout earbuds or headphones.

August 6, 2025 - With ear cups that can rotate up to 90 degrees, they’ll sit comfortably on your head, too, so you can focus on your workout without worrying about any headphones-related discomfort. These headphones can actively block out up to 19 decibels worth of sound, keeping you immersed in the audio of your choosing rather than the background din of the gym. Several verified buyers of these overall popular gym headphones reported units that stopped working before the two-year mark, but they also noted that Treblab customer service is responsive and helpful in resolving any issues that cropped up.

November 26, 2025 - The OpenRock X are another pair of open-ear headphones and have similar issues for outdoor workouts as the SoundGear Sense. August 5, 2024 -
I want some over ear headphones after getting sick of losing my AirPods. Comfort is a massive thing for me and I want something that won’t disintegrate with sweat. ANC/wireless are other musts. I had the beats over ear headphones before and found them so uncomfy to the point of not being able to wear them so want to avoid that again! Less than £150 ideally, but could go a little over
I’ve been looking at: JBL Lux ANC Sony WH-ULT900N ULT Wear Seinheiser accentum Bose quiet comfort Sony WH-1000XM4
Any advice or personal experience would be very welcome

There is sadly no way to prevent them from getting nasty or for washing to eventually to wear down the pads. Good maintenance will help but the inevitable seems to always happen. Personally I just ended up using koss Ksc75s for the gym because they are cheap, feel like little clouds on my ears, have good sound quality, and replacement pads are super cheap. It's annoying to deal with a cord and dongle but not having to worry about more expensive headphones getting lost/stolen/broken is worth it imo. But to answer your question if I had to i would go with Bose quiet comfort ultras. Keep in mind 90% of the reason isn't necessarily that I enjoy Bose's sound signature (it's not bad, I'm just more used to wired sound quality with non mainstream sound signatures). The reason being they stick to my head well, are comfortable, they are extremely light and easy to clean, and there are a ton of earpad options on the market so I don't have to pay an arm and a leg to replace pads when it comes time that I inevitably need to replace them. I stick to ksc75s if I know I'm going to do a grueling workout but for most workout days the Bose do extremely well...my beat up pair have lasted 4 years and only just now are finally starting to suffer from battery degradation (but still hold a very long charge).

I am also looking for over ear headphones for the gym and they sell washable sweat proof covers for the ear pads so they don’t get nasty. Just thought I would throw that out there. Edited to remove the link as after doing some more research I’m not confident in that brand of headphones.

March 12, 2023 - If you asked me to choose, I would pick an in-ear: AKG N400/NC or Airpods Pro (for Apple users). Not sure about the Airpods Pro, but the AKGs have fairly good harman sound (according to Crinacle's personal rankings), IPX7, passive noise isolation, small mass, are cable-free, and grippy wings/fins. You could search for specific V-Moda headphones under the tab "Head Gear Items". RTINGS.com has their own review (including gym ratings) of some V-Moda models.
