Don't get the Gourmet line. It's their cheaper stamped construction. And of course the standard spiel about how sets usually aren't actually a good deal etc. etc. The Classic/Ikon lines are absolutely worth it though. imo Ikon are just about the best knives you can buy before you fall down the rabbit hole of exotic Japanese stuff. (Classic are equally good except the full bolster makes sharpening a bit harder) More on reddit.com

This is a great choice, IMHO. The specific set you are referring to is nice because it's only three knives--a paring knife, a serrated knife, and a chef's knife. All of those are extremely useful knives for just about anyone who cooks, and buying those three individually would cost more than buying this limited set. The build quality of the Classic Ikon is also great, and the block has room for someone to add more knives in the future if they find themselves wanting something more specialized than these three more general-purpose knives. This will make a great gift. Sets that have a bazillion knives have the issue of giving you a bunch of obscure knives that you don't really have a use for, and often these sets are quantity over quality, but that isn't the case here at all.
