Grandfather's WW2 flight jacket
Hello all. Deep in the corner of my father's attack we found my grandfather's ww2 flight jacket.
Roy Leonard Thomas was a warrant officer in 72, and then 245 squadron of the RAF. Flying Spitfires and then Hawker Typhoons before being shot down on the 24th March, 1945 near Kalkar, Germany.
We are yet undecided what to do with this precious and treasured family artifact. Would anyone here know whether this would be of interest to any museums? It has been flown in combat service during WW2. Would it be possible to donate it to a museum for safe keeping, while still maintaining ownership?

September 29, 2024The only leather jacket I own - WW2 RAF-style sheepskin flying jacket
I had this made for my 21st birthday. It is made out of 100% lambskin. I have always loved these flying jackets; I grew up with my grandparents, and my grandfather was always engrossed in a WW2 documentary. As one can imagine, I was perpetually seeing these heroic bombardiers donning this jacket and this left a profound effect on this very easily influenced child. I saved up for over a year, and for my 21st birthday, I had this made for me by a small British leather company; everything is handcrafted, and the skins are hand-selected. I visited their workshop, and I really admired the traditional hands-on approach they took in crafting their jackets. It was pricey for me, a student, £711 ($900) but I understand that this piece will last me decades with good care. I mean, there are still jackets from WW2 around! It is heavy, and it has kept me warm throughout winter and when I paired this with my WW2 RAF 10 ply wool sweater and leather gloves, I could go into the negatives still warm. It is a versatile and very iconic piece, and you can dress it up or down. The wool inside and the leather are supple and soft; they feel very comfortable against the skin. It still smells terrific; that leathery smell has yet to dissipate in the year I've had this. What I found interesting was, on the back of the jacket, if you look up close, you can see slight scratches in the skin where the lamb had scraped against barbed wire or the like during its life. It is my favourite garment, and I figured I'd share it with you folks. More on reddit.com
