r/google on Reddit: Yahoo was a well-known brand like Google & doing great. But why did Yahoo fail? A story you want to know.
July 13, 2021 -

Do you know that back in time Yahoo was also a big brand like Google? Then what happened that it now disappeared?

Firstly let’s look at Yahoo’s big mistakes:

  • Yahoo was at its peak position before 1998 and Google was launched in September 1998.

  • 1998: Larry Page & Sergey Brin offered their revolutionary search engine algorithm(Page rank technology) for $1 million to Yahoo but Yahoo refused the offer.

  • 1998: Yahoo refused to buy Google for $1 million.

  • 2002: Yahoo realized its mistake and tried to buy Google for $3 billion. Google asked for $5 billion and Yahoo refused again.

  • 2006: Yahoo attempted to buy Facebook at $1 billion while Facebook wanted the offer of $1.1 billion and Yahoo refused to buy Facebook by considering the amount overvalued.

  • 2008: Yahoo refused to be sold to Microsoft for $44.6 billion.

  • 2016: Yahoo sold for $4.6 billion to Verizon.

Now let us look at the reasons for Yahoo’s downfall:

  • First thing first ‘Yahoo did not pay much attention or use the right strategy for its marketing part.

  • Unfair Acquisitions: Yahoo invested its money on acquiring those companies that gave the opposite results of the expectations. Companies like: Broadcast.com, GeoCities, Overture Services, Flickr, Right media, Tumblr.

  • Yahoo missed many awesome & great opportunities and made big mistakes as I told you in ‘Yahoo’s big mistakes. There were various offers made in front of Yahoo to expand but Yahoo refused all of them. Also, multiple other businesses were eating Yahoo’s market share but it was not eager to handle its downfall.

  • Lack of real vision.

  • Appointment of wrong CEO (Terry Semel) who had a strong background but was not much aware of the future internet unlike the CEO of Google (Eric Schmidt) who was fully aware of future technology & who made a contribution to the development of Java programming language at Sun Microsystem. An interesting thing is that both Google & Yahoo appointed the new CEO at the same time to further their development & expansion.

  • Rejection of Microsoft’s proposal.

  • Failing to buy Facebook.

I've been trying to find a new email that isn't either Google or Microsoft. I've heard about protonmail but I want an email that is still recognizable enough amongst everyone. Yahoo is by no means the tech giant it used to be so I figured it could be a good option, but I'm unfamiliar with their practices as a tech company.

r/SEO on Reddit: Ranking on Bing and Yahoo is much better than Google!
May 30, 2022 -

My new website, which has been running for 2 month, some of the keyword has been indexed by google and their rank is not good as they shown on Bing and Yahoo. For example, one of my keyword on google ranked #48 and it ranked on Bing is #3.

That's funny because the #1 search phrase on Bing is "Google"

Everyone has to start somewhere and somehow. If your ranking on bing drives quality traffic that converts, stays onsite, visits other pages on your site etc…. It can and will improve your ranking on Google as Google sees the right metrics increasing. It won’t drive you to the top but will benefit nonetheless. Bings demographic is gift giving grannies. If they are your demographic, you may have found your captive audience. There are many many site that are killing it in sales that may never see page 1 on google for their strongest phrases. There are many ways to slay this dragon. Plus there are many different search engines and methods. Google reaches 94% of Internet users worldwide minus China. FB reaches 74%. Amazon only reaches 8% of internet users worldwide yet look at the revenue changing hands on the site daily. If I sold gun holsters, do I want to put all of my effort into ranking well on google for phrases that will be very difficult to rank for? Or do I want to compete on Amazon where every view and search for my product phrases appear alongside all of my competitors fight for marketshare and many of them willing to make a penny per sale because they listened to some fake guru who toldd then ranking is success not profit? Or do I want to focus my efforts on sites like gunbroker, a firearms and accessory only website with a fraction of the competition but 12 million fanatics from my target audience on the site looking for one category of products, gun supplies? Google is king but volume can be deceiving depending on quality. Lastly, specific keywords may be impossible for you to conceivably expect to much success anytime soon, but there are vehicles that you might be able to borrow and leverage their authority on google to get listed, called parasite SEO. For example, Quora ranks for 67 million phrases on google with 5.5 million on page one. A quick Google search using site:quora.com “your main keyword phrase” will result in a long list of quora questions currently ranking on Google for your topic. Find the most relevant questions, and go to quora to look at the other answers. Then you need to create a better, higher quality answer. Add a short video to your answer as well and a link pointing back to your site content for more info. If you did a good job and the question has a lot of followers on Quora, they will all be notified of a new answer. The surge in views and potential upvotes can move you into their most useful answer spot for that question which mean your answer now will appear on google in the Quora search result. There are plenty of other sites and methods to further piggyback the great ranking of other sites. Sustainable success means creating multiple solid streams of traffic. When Google sees that, it impacts Google too

January 16, 2024 - Google has done a good job of creating infrastructure to keep them almost invincible against irrelevancy (Google office being a free MS office, free email services, free ReCAPTCHA services, pixel phones, free Dropbox/cloud storage, Android phone software etc.).

r/SEO on Reddit: Is Google the next Yahoo?

Few years ago when you tried searching for something on Yahoo search, it showed up search results to answers that were both confusing as well as vague.

You would not use Yahoo again.

Today Google has become the same.

Ask any question that's one layer deep on any given topic and it shows up answers that are generic and vague like Yahoo search is.

You would come out being more confused than you did before the search.

Google knows it has this issue. It's doing nothing about it.

We all know, two months ago Google launched a "Helpful Content Update" where it warned and made assuraces that this update would make everthing 'Ok'. It would be like the Panda or any of those updates that kept SEO junkies sweating all day! They said the update would solve the issues of unhelpful content being found on most search queries.

Crickets!

Nothing happened. All it did was remove content made by bots!

It seems Google has no intention of improving content any more. Its only interested in helping first timers. Ones who have no idea about a given topic and searching for it the first time. Ones who are ok with a Wikipedia search.

Google has now become the Status Quo.

It's open to being disrupted by another company or a bunch of entrepreneurs who are ready to help consumers answer the deeper questions on any topic. Disrupted by the ones who want to serve audiences that search beyond Wikipedia and want to go deep.

Google is in the same position as once Yahoo was two decades ago.

Google is the next Yahoo!

r/stocks on Reddit: Yahoo Finance vs Google Finance return difference
March 10, 2024 -

I've found that Google Finance and Yahoo Finance have different formula for calculating stock return over a period.

Yahoo Finance uses the closing price of the periods involved and Google Finance uses the opening price of the period start and closing price of period end.

I think Google engineers are smarter than Yahoo engineers. But I'm very confused why Google chose this.

As an example, in Yahoo Finance NVDA stock shows up as 2.68% return for 5-days (i.e. this just concluded trading week), versus 3.98% in Google Finance.

Who is right?

r/yahoo on Reddit: How is Yahoo still relevant?
November 25, 2023 -

Ever since 2017 when Yahoo was purchased by Verizon, the site has increasingly got worse and worse. In 2018, they shut down Messenger and gave the most generic reason to why. Instead of improving it and making it like Google Chat, they just shut it down, opened another service like it, and then shut that down too and gave no reason. In 2016, they shut down Yahoo Games and gave the same stupid vague reason like they later did with Messenger. The reason the Yahoo Games shutdown is significant is because it was a service that made Yahoo seem like a cool place to play games and chat with friends. Lastly, they shut down Yahoo Answers in 2021 and gave the reason saying they are "moving forward to make more innovative products" which is TOTAL bs. Yahoo Answers had an active community and was a strong Quora competitor, but they shut that down too.

They could have a larger user base if they just improved their existing products to align with what users want instead of lazing out and just shutting down all the cool stuff they had. As of 2023, all thats left of Yahoo is Finance, Mail, News, Sports, and Search, which are all boring services that just piggyback off other news sites and services like Bing. And their premium support packages that are a total ripoff. The only reason Yahoo even exists is because people still have Yahoo Mail accounts that they haven't transferred to other mail services. Once Mail shuts down, Yahoo is done.

TL;DR: Yahoo could have a bunch of users, but their bad business decisions led to their downfall.

They even shut down the Yahoo Groups. Pretty dumb for them to do that too.

I completely agree that Yahoo’s Boomer and Gen X employees were greedy and their decisions killed Yahoo. (Gen X here btw.) And if Yahoo Mail were to disappear then so would Yahoo. However by Pro / Con decision making using Yahoo Mail is not a horrible thing to do since other mail services do lack what Yahoo has that I like even though the Yahoo functionality and employees suck. I have a yahoo.com, gmail.com, icloud.com, comcast.com, and aol.com email address. I have 5 email addresses. My yahoo.com for businesses and bots. Anytime a non-human asks me for my email address i give this yahoo.com address. It makes it easier to do delete all. My gmail.com is for family, friends, a.k.a. people to know. And if a business spam was in this email account then I can always do a change email to feature of that business or kill it. right there two email accounts that I have had forever and that back each other up. Meaning if I get locked out of my Google account, I tell it to send the verification code to my Yahoo account and if I get locked out of my yahoo account I can do the same thing over to Google , sending your verification information from Google to Google is dumb. using just one email address for the entire planet and then complaining there’s too much stuff in it is dumb. My iCloud email account is my newest addition that I’ll most likely have forever. My comcast.net account is free but never worth using because it would trap me from going with a different ISP when Xfinity becomes an official overlord. My aol.com account is one I have had forever too and i use it for testing and some other yada yada social accounts. My emails are read and composed using the app Yahoo Mail! for [email protected] , [email protected] , [email protected] , and [email protected] . For [email protected] I either use the native Apple Mail app or the iCloud website. Reasons I like the app Yahoo Mail and mail.yahoo.com are: Bulk Deletions: I can select a check box to select an entire day or week or month to select all rows for day, week, or month. THEN I look at each rows and uncheck those I do not want to delete or move in order to read the message. The app Yahoo Mail allows that selecting workflow. At mail.yahoo.com I can click search for messages from a person or business and then delete those in bulk. And because I can read and reply to the gmail.com. Aol.com and comcast.net emails in the app too then that means i clean up mail much quicker. Stationary: As crazy as this sounds I love the broken functionality of Stationary that Yahoo offers. it is unfortunate that the world decided an email is not a letter. Half of the breakdown of the world is because of that stupid decision for forcing people to say greeting and the body of their letter and a salutation really wasn’t that difficult to be civil. And now people are saying you don’t even even have to use punctuation when you’re using electronics. Why bother? I’ll tell you why you should bother because it makes people less angry when they can understand you. And since so many people are already angry I then use stationary to hopefully brighten somebody’s day, even if it’s just a simple little fox at the top of a piece of email correspondence or if it’s something grand like a snowy scene around a house. Electronic Signatures: The other app emails probably allow for electronic signatures but since I can compose a Google Mail in the app app Yahoo Mail and have my email say it’s from my Google Mail account then you know I don’t really care at least it’s all in one place and the signature is all function, the same. Storage: Yahoo Mail gives me 1 TB of storage. All the others give me 5 GB. There are way more features with the app Yahoo Mail and with mail.yahoo.com than Google’s gmail has. And frankly Google has been around long enough to have included some other nice features, and they haven’t. They do nothing, but bring trackers to our desktop and our mobile devices. Do I wish Yahoo grew some balls and fixed stuff? Yes. Would I move to Gmail as Primary if they did what Yahoo had? Probably. Will either work on their platforms that they offer for free and never should have? No. For me free Yahoo has more features than free Google.
