Tag inside the sound hole is in print form not script Y A M A H A
No. 120 NIPPON GAKKI I tried to post a pic but apparently that’s not allowed. Sn477880 Guitar has excellent mellow tone, and I love it for that. I’ve had it 30 years and got it from a guy that had it at least that long, he said he picked it up used at a pawn shop in 1965.
Any advice is appreciated to help me solve this question I’ve had for 45 years
Hi everyone,
I recently picked up this Yamaha acoustic guitar and I'm trying to determine exactly what model it is and whether it's an original Yamaha product. There are a few confusing details that I hope some of you more experienced Yamaha enthusiasts can help clarify.
Here’s what I’ve noticed:
Model label inside the soundhole says "FG830", but the body and shape resemble the FGX series, which usually includes electronics (this one doesn't).
There is no electronic system—no preamp, no output jack, nothing—yet the body depth and cutaway are much more like what you'd see on an FGX series guitar.
The pickguard is missing, though it's unclear whether it was removed or simply never installed. There’s no noticeable outline or glue residue where one might have been.
The action is a bit high, especially around the 12th fret, making it slightly harder to play. This might just be a setup issue, though.
Overall build quality feels solid and consistent with Yamaha craftsmanship, but the mix of FG and FGX characteristics makes me wonder if this is a factory hybrid, a modified unit, or potentially even a counterfeit.
I’ve attached close-up photos showing the body, soundhole, and saddle area. I’d really appreciate any insights you all might have—especially from anyone familiar with FG830 and FGX830C models.
Thanks in advance!
