Zone 6B - I'm looking for a shrub or flowering bush of some sort that can block my neighbor's garage, but I would prefer it cover it in winter too? My first thought was hydrangea but I know those are just sticks in the winter. Am I stuck with some sort of evergreen variety?
I've been on the hunt for evergreen shrubs that make it through southern midwest winters. Specifically, if they flower at some point.
I've only really found two varieties:
Fall blooming Camellias - Can get tall but take a while to grow. The fall blooming varieties do not have the geometric blooms that camellias are known for, but that's ok. Spring blooming varieties seem to lose their buds over winter, as they are fundamentally different. Fall bloomers grow their buds in spring, making them safe.
Hellebores - I've just heard of these. They seem to bloom in spring for us (May and on), grow low and can handle winter.
We have boxwood and other basic evergreen shrubs that stay green all year and form the backdrop of the garden when it's winter, but I really want to mix in plants like the above to keep it more interesting in winter and throughout the year.
Does anyone know of other plants that meets these criteria?
