Hello, I will be camping at Yellowstone this summer at both Madison and Grant in late August. My question is would the fire pits be sufficient enough for use with a mess kit for a solo camper or are they too strong? Second, is there any resources on fire burning? I’ve sifted through the NPS website and I was not able to find much in regards to it. Anything would help and I’m looking forward to your responses!
The fire pit we had would have been fine to use (so long as you control the size of your fire). Firewood can be bought in the villages for ~$9/box/bundle. We used propane and isobutane stoves instead.
Sidenote, you can legally collect downed trees for firewood in the park. My ex used to bring a Sawzall and we would cut up downed lodgepole pines. We confirmed with several rangers and the website that this is okay as long as the tree is naturally fell. To me it wasn’t worth the savings and convenience of getting a seasoned box, but those can get pricey in the park.
