I think if this was a made up character it may hit the audience differently but since it isn't, they can see through his delusions. His song reminds me of a toxic friend/partner. They think they did nothing wrong. In fact, they think they did really well when in truth they didn't. Then by the end, the threat comes out "I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love" brings out the true feelings this character has. He doesn't want to rule with your best intentions in mind, he wants to rule for more control and selfish reasons. Answer from AnxiousBarnacle on reddit.com

You'll Be Back Lyrics — Hamilton (Musical)
In many ways, “You’ll Be Back” is the breakup song from hell. George isn’t interested in mutual love—he wants praise, obedience, submission. And he’s not subtle about it. When he sings, “You’ll be back, time will tell,” the double meaning cuts deep.

People also ask

Why is “You’ll Be Back” styled like a pop love song?
The song uses the love song format to parody colonial possessiveness. By making imperial domination sound like a jilted ex-boyfriend’s ballad, it exposes the absurdity of George’s entitlement and emotional manipulation.

What does the repeated line “I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love” signify?
It’s the climax of the song’s dark joke. By placing grotesque violence in the middle of a catchy chorus, it lampoons how tyranny cloaks cruelty in the language of care.

What inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda to write this song?
The song was sparked during his honeymoon, with Hugh Laurie jokingly saying “Aww, youll be back.” Miranda turned that quip into the song’s concept — a tyrant writing a delusional love letter to his revolting colonies.

r/hamiltonmusical on Reddit: How does "You'll be back" make you feel?
August 28, 2022 -

I just had to ask you guys. I heard "You'll be back" for the first time like, 2 hours ago. And this song just makes me really, really sad. Like, at some point, heavy, in a way. I watched Jonathan Groff's performance and while the audience were laughing, I can't help but feel sorry for this character.

Even before watching any videos, listening to it... there's just something about the beat? The tune? I can't seem to put my finger on it. Am I just imagining this? Thoughts?

Edit: I forgot to mention I first listened to this song without historical context beforehand. Still sad though but not that much anymore. Thanks for the responses. 😅

My Selection — “You’ll Be Back” from the musical “Hamilton” | by Walter Bowne | Literary Selections | Medium
March 12, 2021 - The title is ironic; because, obviously, The United States does not come back to Britain. The irony is established early: especially with the jaunty, toe-tapping, leg-swinging, finger-waving beat. The song is one of a toxic love relationship — with the male making all sorts of pronouncements and threats and predictions. When the king sings, “you’re my favorite subject” we can take that line as ironic too.
