Part of it is that it was literally darker. The lighting was usually unsettling and it was much grittier. S2 was so bright by comparison, it took away some of the suspense. It should have been shot the same way s1 was. Style and cinematography is sooooo important! Answer from Deleted User on reddit.com

r/YouOnLifetime on Reddit: Season 1

I am through like 5 episodes as my friend suggested this show since I am a fan of Dexter.

I just wanted to vent some of my thoughts on the show. I wanted to know if anyone else thinks this or has any other thoughts.

Ok firstly, the show is definitely not Dexter at all. Not even close. I enjoy the character though narrations which are similar to Dexter but this is probably the closest and best thing about the show.

Also, the writing and dialogue so far is meh for me. It seems to lack any sort of humor, and the connections between characters are just lacking to me. I struggle with there being any depth of story between Beck and Joe. It just seems forced to me.

I think the show has potential so I will keep watching for now at least through this season. I feel like this shows audience is maybe aimed for a woman audience from the writing so maybe I feel disconnected this way. I don’t know. What do you think? I will add more maybe as it comes to mind.

Also, if you have any other suggestions similar to Dexter let me know. I started Barry as well and I am enjoying it as well, I like the humor in Barry. Of course it’s not as serious but the acting is better than You in my opinion. I also think Beck is carrying the season at this moment for me, if it wasn’t for her, I probably would have stopped watching after episode 1.

Thanks if you made it this far lol.

r/YouOnLifetime on Reddit: Some Questions About Season 1
November 1, 2021 -

Ok, just finished season 1 and I'm wondering what you all think of a few things.

Does Joe actually have a good side or some semblance of a conscience? Did Joe actually care about Paco and Claudia, his troubled neighbors? It felt weird to be rooting for Joe whenever he interacted with Paco's abusive POS stepdad Ron, who had a (correct) instinct that something was off about Joe. Also did Joe truly admire Karen for being a good person, and were his attempts not to cheat at first due to an actual twinge of conscience?

How did you feel when Paco finally attacked Ron with a baseball bat, then Ron ran after him looking to hurt the kid, and Joe ended up showing up and killing Ron in order to defend Paco? I couldn't help but root for Joe and Paco in that scene because Ron was so awful and abusive. But of course, it's only going to create more problems for Paco psychologically, being an accomplice to covering up a murder and then having to hold that secret as he grows up.

When Joe locked Beck in the cage, do you think she was ever sincere when she said she knew he had a good heart somewhere or was she just trying to manipulate him to get out of the cage? Like when she said "It's sweet." that he was worried about Paco with tears in her eyes, was it all an act? Was she going back and forth with her emotions or was she officially disgusted and done with him once she found his stalker/murder box?

When Beck yelled for help and Paco came to the locked door and didn't let her out because she said Joe was in the basement and going to kill her, what was going through Paco's head when he didn't let her out? Do you think Paco actually believed Joe was going to kill her? Paco had seen Joe kill Ron, but Ron was a violent abuser and Beck was not. I don't think Paco could wrap his head around the fact that the guy who protected him could also murder innocent people.

Did you think Joe was actually going to end up physically hurting or murdering Beck? I'll admit, as someone who barely knew a thing about the show, I wasn't so sure. He got progressively creepier as the season went on. I thought he might simply continue to kill "for her", and keep her locked away forever because of his "love" or something.

EDIT: Feel free to just answer whatever you feel like, of course haha. I know this is quite the list!

Well these are just my opinions, so don't take them as facts. Does Joe actually have a good side or some semblance of a conscience? He has a good side, that is, to protect (and sometimes not in a good way). If you watch the later seasons, you'll know more of him and why he acts this way. He doesn't seem to have that much of a conscience though because he justifies his murders. In any of the seasons, I've never heard him think or say that he's even sorry for killing Beck (or maybe I just forgot). Did Joe actually care about Paco and Claudia, his troubled neighbors?Yes, he cared about them, especially Paco. I think Joe saw himself in Paco, so he felt sympathy. When Joe was a kid, he was also like Paco. That made him want to protect Paco, as well as his mom who was being hurt by the stepdad (who reminded Joe of his own abusive stepdad). Also did Joe truly admire Karen for being a good person, and were his attempts not to cheat at first due to an actual twinge of conscience? I think Karen was just a rebound. I don't think he truly liked her. He was still in-love with Beck when he was with Karen. But yeah, maybe he did feel conscience a bit because Karen is just too nice of a person. When Joe locked Beck in the cage, do you think she was ever sincere when she said she knew he had a good heart somewhere or was she just trying to manipulate him to get out of the cage? No. She was simply just trying to get out of there. It was all an act. "Rot in there you psychotic a..hole", she told him after she locked him in the cage. When Beck yelled for help and Paco came to the locked door and didn't let her out because she said Joe was in the basement and going to kill her, what was going through Paco's head when he didn't let her out? When Beck screamed to Paco "he's a murderer!", Paco thought she was talking about Ron. Paco thought that Beck found out Joe killed Ron. So Paco ran away. He also promised Joe to keep quiet about it. Do you think Paco actually believed Joe was going to kill her? I don't think so. He didn't even know what was exactly going on down there. Did you think Joe was actually going to end up physically hurting or murdering Beck? Before the climax, I really didn't expect it to happen. I simply imagined that in the finale, Beck would find out and tell the cops or something, and Joe would just go into hiding and disappear and they would cross paths again in season 2.

Once he discovered that she cheated, he only showed more of who he really is. As much as he tried to keep it contained, he simply could not. Beck went snooping and her own discovery fed his insanity. The only "human" thing about Joe is his caring for Paco. He sees himself in Paco cause he also came from an abusive household. As for Karen, he did her a HUGE favor.

How can you kill someone you’re in love with?

I remember when Joe said while narrating that he could die for Beck in a heartbeat. Was that a lie coming from him because of his obsession?

I don’t have enough courage left to watch next seasons. Developing characters (especially leads) just to kill them off at the end feels like betrayal as a viewer.

I am not able to deal with the ending, this might be the most heartbreaking series for me. I don’t know why is it affecting me so much.

I went to office today & couldn’t focus on work. I guess I was in love with Beck more than Joe. 💔

Thank you for reading!

Hey everyone, I just wrapped up Season 1 of You and dove right into Season 2. While I’m definitely intrigued by the shift in setting and new characters, I’m starting to feel a bit worried that the story might fall into the same pattern again.

Love seems like she could end up being just another victim in Joe/Will’s cycle, and I’m not sure how I feel about that yet.

For those who’ve watched further — without major spoilers, does the show manage to keep things fresh? Or does it become a repeat of Season 1 with a new face?

I also don’t want to be heartbroken again… Beck’s death was very, very tragic… couldn’t survive another death like that

r/YouOnLifetime on Reddit: Season 1 feels so different from other seasons
April 3, 2023 -

Season 1 feels somewhat grounded and more realistic, the tone is different too, seems like there's more drama in season 1. Whereas the other seasons are more unrealistic (season 4 being the most unrealistic), the other seasons just feel kinda like a comic book I guess, Joe is still pretty evil ofc but in season 2, 3 and 4 you get crazier supporting characters like Love, and even though he wasn't a murderer but Forty was pretty crazy too, so was Love's mom, Kate's dad, etc. Ofc toxic people exist irl but in season 1 the most toxic side characters Joe met were Peaches and Benji, which they were terrible people but they weren't as over the top as some of the later characters. I'm not saying it's bad, or anything the show became more over the top, it's just a different tone.

Season 1 of You is honestly a masterpiece, and I cant stop rewatching it. There’s something so dark about how Joe Goldberg’s obsession with Beck drives the whole season. He’s the "ultimate stalker" creepy and calculating and dangerously charming. Every move he makes is so methodical, like he’s always one step ahead, yet his flaws make him even more terrifying. In season 1 he's not trying to not be the killing stalker bastard cause thats what he thinks will protect his love. In later season he tried his best not to be one(which he ends up being since thats the plot of the show)

r/YouOnLifetime on Reddit: Unpopular opinion: Season 1 is still the best

Now that Season 4 is finished, I have to say that even though it was fun, it falls short compared to S1 as do the rest of the seasons.

Season 1 continues to be the best. The characters in it felt way more alive and Beck felt like the realest person out of every one of Joe's romantic interests. Love was too over the top IMO, though Victoria Pedretti was super fun to watch in that role. The rest of the love interests were... at best indifferent, at worst downright boring.

We also got to have a good look at Joe's past and his relationship with Mr Mooney, who we've never seen again since.

The overall feel of season 1 is unmatched. It's a great thriller with a little bit of comedy sprinkled on top. There is a certain unpredictability, it's way darker, intense and down to earth. Joe's inner monologues and comments feel better crafted and offer more than just disdain for certain people for the sole purpose of getting a chuckle out of you.

The other seasons feel like "The Adventures of Joe Goldberg" where we get caught up in crazy shenanigans in different places with increasingly gimmicky characters, where murder just happens to be there as a plot device to keep viewers entertained and to try and see how many different ways can Joe kill and get rid of bodies. The murders don't feel as hard hitting and shocking and are more lighthearted, used almost only for fun.

That's not to say the show isn't fun anymore, but unfortunately it's too far gone and will never reach the heights of S1.

Let me know what you think!

Am I the only one that thinks season 1 is the best season of the show? As much as I like love and that she was as much as a psycho as joe, season 1 for me is the season I enjoy the most. I feel it felt more realistic in how obession & love occur

r/YouOnLifetime on Reddit: The last episode of season 1
March 14, 2021 -

I've watched seasons 1 and 2 and just wanted to say I think this was the best episode out of all of them. Elizabeth Lail's acting was great in this one.

When she found Joe's stalker/murder box, it was weird how my perception of Joe changed along with her, even though I knew the entire time who he was. The jar of teeth. Holy shit, I felt her shock and revulsion when she dropped it. Like when she came out of the bathroom with the cut on her hand, and Joe was like, "Let me take care of you." and makes her sit down even though she's now viewing him with terror and just wanting to get out of there, I was thinking, "Run, girl!" I never really thought Joe was possibly capable of hurting her until then, because he duped me too. Which is pretty damn dumb of me, honestly.

Then when she wakes up in the cage and Joe confesses everything, her reactions were amazing. It's weird because it's like when she saw how truly revolting Joe actually was, so did I. Again, I knew the whole time, so how did Joe fool me so well? Yes, I thought he was creepy and his actions wrong, but I somehow believed he really did think he was doing it all to protect the one he "loved". Benji and Peach were not good people, and really WEREN'T good for Beck, which of course the show did on purpose to make the viewer feel conflicted about Joe. But then when he's explaining it all to Beck why he had to kill them "for" her and she's freaking out, terrified, it's like he looked WAY more psycho to me too. When she starts screaming "Please don't hurt me!" Holy shit, what a shift in their relationship dynamic, to put it mildly.

I didn't actually think he'd hurt or possibly kill Beck as well until the last episode, because he "loved" her. Why though?

When Beck locked Joe in the cage and told him off, it was super gratifying because he deserved all of those harsh words. I was seriously rooting for her to escape.

r/YouOnLifetime on Reddit: Why does season 1 Joe feel so much more evil than the rest?
February 22, 2024 -

Yeah, title. Season 1 Joe feels so much more insane, deranged, and malevolent than the rest of the seasons. The way he callously murders Benji without genuinely giving a single shit. Or the way he pushes that dude off the rooftop, smiling whilst doing it. He enjoyed that. He enjoyed knowing what he was going to do.

Season 2, he seemed to care for alot more people and didn't want to kill anyone, even letting Will go.

Season 3, he wasn't even the killer lmao.

Season 4, yes, he murders alot of legally innocent people but the season is very fragmented and distorted, and you can tell he feels immense guilt over what he did to Love, Beck, hell even fucking Gemma. And yes, there's the ending where he very easily murders a college student and frames Nadia for it. But I don't like that the show kinda treats this as a new thing. He was a monster and an evil evil person from the start.
