I'm in the US, and they would pay with a card from their home country
YouTube is getting increasingly aggressive in enforcing its location rules for YouTube Premium, especially for family plans. Subscriptions are now being cancelled if family members live in a different country than where the plan is billed even if the family owner lives in the correct country.
Previously, users could often resubscribe after such cancellations. Now, if the issue lies with the family members locations, the family plan is permanently removed from the owners account, with no option to resubscribe.
This stricter enforcement mainly seems to affect users in lower-cost countries, while pricier regions remain unaffected.

Hi guys, my dad is thinking about sing for YouTube Premium, he lives in Brazil, one of my brothers and I live in different countries in Europe. If he sing for the Family one, could we use it? Thanks
Hey guys wondering if you can help me! So I made a separate dummy YouTube/ gmail account, turned on my VPN to Russia and purchased YouTube premium for family. However, when I try to invite my actual YouTube account I get hit with the above error. Anyone know how to fix it? Thanks in advance!
Hi everyone I managed to get back to youtube Premium Argentina, but I have problem adding other people to my plan because they don't live in the same region. Does anyone manage to share your account with other people outside of your "region"?
Good morning everyone. I've been reading recently that I can possibly get Youtube Premium for a good bit cheaper by signing up through another country. I already have a VPN, so switching to a different country isn't a problem. My question is this: If I already subscribe to the Premium Family plan from the USA, would it be possible to cancel that account, and re-sign up from India? I'd like to use the same Google/Youtube account if possible.
Hello guys, I am planning on purchasing a YouTube Premium Family subscription to share with my mom and dad, however, I am currently in USA and they are in Colombia. Would the subscription work even if they are in another country? Thank you so much.
My brother was recently signed up on a UK family plan and I couldn't joint for some reason but I had my own paying for an Indian account and was fine. I got the email to say I wasn't allowed to do that so l'm currently paying full price.
My brother also got the email and was able to successfully sign up with a Polish account. Other people have joined this family with a normal UK account but everyone I try it just says this error below.
I have done the whole switching account and payment method to Poland but still says this. Any ideas of ways around this or does it look like my account is flagged or something?
Hi, my brother is having YouTube premium subscription with me as a member in it. Recently I got a mail from YouTube saying my services will be paused because of this reason. How should I overcome this?
As many people have noted here, YouTube recently cracked down on Family Plan Premium Memberships where the five family members did not live in the same building, with Premium benefits being "paused" permanently. For some cancelled subscribers, the family members were their actual biological families but who live in other locations; for others (such as myself) the "family" merely consisted of five random people who mutually agreed to form a "household" and share the cost of Family Premium Plan.
However, no one seems to know how restrictive the new geolocation requirements are. Some people claim the cancellations only hit "Families" where the members were spread out across multiple nations -- but if all "Family members" were in the same nation, then it was OK. Others speculate that it is more on a regional basis -- such that (for example) is you were all in the same US state, then the memberships weren't cancelled, but if people are spread out to different states (but still within the same nation), then they would get cancelled. And some people claim that you literally all have to be in the same building, or your Family Premium benefits will be cancelled.
Which is true? I don't know. But maybe we could try an experiment:
If people were willing to start open "Family" accounts that were regionally restricted, maybe they would fly under YouTube's radar and be allowed. So for example, I live in California, and if someone else who also lived in California were to create a Family account with a Premium membership, and then invite in (sharing the cost) four other (random) people, with the only restriction being that they all live in California. Then the "family" would all apear to be in the same general area, and YouTube would allow it. And if that didn't work, we could get more geographically restrictive, and limit potential members to (in my case, for example) the San Francisco Bay Area, or wherever your city/region is.
I don't have the tech know-how to be the one wh starts a group, but I would be willing to join a newly created California-only Family group with Premium membership.
And if other people wanted to try similar experiments in other locations (e.g. an Ireland-only family, New York-only family, etc.), I'd love to hear the results if it worked or not.
Any thoughts?
Family plan from cheaper country hack worked for 11 months. I had used a payment card from that country. Damn.
Is there any ways to get around this now ?
YouTube is giving me triple the amount of ads now making up for the ads that I missed while on premium
Since the recent crackdown on adblocks, I figured I'll finally buy a premium subscription. I want to buy a family plan to share with my gf (whose also abroad) and my family. However, currently I'm studying abroad, and my family is in another country. Can I still share the subscription with my family? Do they need to constantly use a VPN when watching Youtube? And if I want to buy the subscription in my country's currency (cheaper haha), do I and my gf need to constantly use VPN?

I am an Indian settled in Canada. I have been using YouTube Premium (family) from India for the last 3 years. I was already in Canada when I first enrolled.
Recently, I made a mistake to cancel the subscription. As soon as I realized, I went to renew the subscription but I keep getting the message "we couldn't verify your country".
I already tried using VPN from India as well as deleting my Canadian payment profile on google but I still keep getting this error message.
What should I do? There are 5 other family members who are depending on my to find a solution as I am the family account manager.
Note: I want to renew at India prices as they are considerably cheaper than Canadian prices.
Might as well call it Household Plan instead of Family Plan. My family of 5 lives in 2 different households. I also travel frequently from one place to another. I honestly don’t understand this L corporate greed. You guys will just piss people of and lose customers over a few dollars instead of keeping them happy with longevity 💀
In a significant policy shift that began quietly at the end of 2024, YouTube has restricted access to its Family Plan subscription, making it available only to accounts that meet specific eligibility criteria. As of last week, the change has been rolled out globally including major markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada with many users now finding the Family Plan option missing entirely, depending on their account’s eligibility.
According to a source at Google familiar with the matter, the new limitations are part of an effort to curb widespread abuse of the Family Plan. The subscription, originally intended for households, had been increasingly exploited by users sharing it with friends or strangers in other countries. A practice that violates YouTube’s terms of service. To address this, YouTube has begun implementing stricter account checks that determine whether the Family Plan option is displayed. Google has not publicly disclosed the exact criteria for eligibility, and the policy was initially tested in select regions before expanding globally.
I used to have a secondary Google account set up with a payment profile in India and was able to pay for cheaper YT Premium in India whilst sharing the benefits with my primary Google account. Only downside was that the YT Music suggested charts and playlists were all Indian but aside from that, no issues and all worked well.
Recently, that method stopped worked so I set up a new Turkish payment profile on my secondary account and paid for cheaper YT Premium in Turkey, again sharing the benefits with my primary account. This time, however, it appears to have reconfigured my Google Play Store on my primary account to be set to Turkey. When I click on my primary acccount's settings, it still lists my country and payment profile as United Kingdom but in Play Store all of my payment options are in Turkish Lira and a whole range of apps are unavailable as they are not available in Turkey.
Any way that I can get the Play Store on my primary account reconfigured back to UK?
