Z-score - Percentile Table for Normal Distribution
March 7, 2024 - The Z-Score Percentile table is a great resource for converting percentile ranks into Z-scores within a normal distribution framework. Itโ€™s a fundamental component of statistical analysis, streamlining the process of assessing dataโ€™s relative position within a normal distribution.

How is z-score converted to percentile?
You really can't do it with pen and paper. It requires approximating an integral for which there is no anti derivative. More on reddit.com

z-score percentile for normal distribution
Where on earth do the z-scores on this table come from? they're values of the inverse of the cdf (quantile function) for a standard normal distribution https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_distribution#Quantile_function Say I wanted to get the z-score for the 1.5th percentile. Is this doable? Sure, any decent stats package will have it. For example in R it would be qnorm(1.5/100) which gives -2.17009. You can even get it from Excel (e.g. see normsinv) Many numerical libraries offer either this function directly or the erf-1 function from which it can be obtained. Is there a formula somewhere for calculating these? Yes and no. If you want a simple closed form formula there isn't one. There are numerous approximations, but they're not really ideal for writing down easily; they're designed to be accurate as well as reasonably fast on computers but they're not designed for dealing with by humans; there are a bunch of approximations given in a number of papers. Getting percentile from z-score
Yes, there most definitely is. The function you want is the normal cumulative distribution function (cdf) NORMSDIST if you already have the z-score. If you don't want to convert to z-score first, you can also use NORMDIST with the info you used to find the z-score. More on reddit.com

How do you use a Z-score table?
To use a Z-score table: 1) Calculate your Z-score, 2) Find the row matching the first two digits, 3) Find the column for the second decimal place, 4) The intersection gives you the probability or area under the normal curve.

What is a Z-score?
A Z-score (or standard score) measures how many standard deviations a data point is from the mean. It's calculated as: Z = (X - ฮผ) / ฯƒ, where X is the value, ฮผ is the mean, and ฯƒ is the standard deviation.

What is a confidence interval?
A confidence interval is a range of values that likely contains the true population parameter. For example, a 95% confidence interval means we're 95% confident the true value falls within that range. Z-scores help calculate these intervals.

June 23, 2025 - The truncated z-table below shows the area for our z-score. By looking at the intersection for 0.6 and 0.07, the z-table indicates that the area under the curve is 0.74857. This value indicates that 74.857% of all apple weights will be lower than our apple weight of 110 grams. Alternatively, you can say that our apple is at the 74.857th percentile.
