You would be crazy not to get one of the NEWER Z790 MB that support higher Memory Clock speeds. In addition to WiFi7. And even crazier not to go DDR5 with the newer games benefiting from the higher bandwidth (finally). If this will hold you over for the next few years, no sense saving the 75 - 100 dollars. I kick myself now staying on DDR4 with a Z690. Answer from riskmakerMe on reddit.com

Is there any reason to choose Z690 over Z790 for a new build ?

Z690 Motherboard prices - are the features worth it?
Unless you will be overclocking a "Z" board is not worth it to me. As long as the board has all the features you need I don't see the point of spending more, a "B" board is fine. You probably won't need to undervolt a 13600K, it doesn't generate as much heat as the i7/i9 CPUs. Just get a good cooler. More on reddit.com

Any Performance Issues for Intel 13th Gen on Z690 Motherboard?
No performance issues. Steve from GN even stated he's using Z690 boards for all benchmarking with the 13th gen CPUs. The only features you're missing are PCIe gen 5, which is currently useless, and more PCIe gen4 lanes from the chipset (at the cost of gen3 lanes. same 28 lane total to the chipset). Unless you need a lot of gen4 SSDs for production work or something, there is no difference at all. More on reddit.com

Z690 vs Z790 - Is there any Difference?
You will not be taking a performance hit at all unless you get a lower quality z690 board(cheaper board might not oc as high). The only difference in the chipsets themselves are more pcie lanes so unless you need a lot of m.2 storage you will be fine with z690. Also remember that you will most likely need a bios update if you go with z690 so get one with bios flashback if you don’t have a 12th gen cpu to do that with. More on reddit.com

r/buildapc on Reddit: Z690 Motherboard prices - are the features worth it?
October 3, 2023 -

To give any reference, I spent the last hours searching for a good motherboard for my planned 13600k and I was shocked about how pricy some of those were, some DDR5 motherboards costing the same, if not more than the CPU itself. The cheapest option started at 200€ and even those are not great, around 275€ pricerange were the good ones (tomahawk, aorus). In the DDR4 space the prices were about -50€, so 150 entry and ~200 for the well received ones.

Now there's been a deal for an entrylevel board(NZXT N5 Z690) for 119€ and I have been wondering is saving the 100€ compared to the tomahawk z690 worth the 214/119=80% increase in cost? Am I the only one that isn't willing to pay more than half the cpu cost for a motherboard? I'm aware that the entry level ones don't come with amazing features for overclocking, but don't do people undervolt everything nowerdays, to counteract the increasingly hot cpu-temps? Let me know how you feel about the price developement of motherboards and whether you believe the extra money is justified.

r/buildapc on Reddit: Any Performance Issues for Intel 13th Gen on Z690 Motherboard?
November 4, 2022 -

I'm looking to overhaul my computer that I've had for a few years now, specifically by getting a new motherboard, CPU and RAM. I'd say that I'm fairly experienced with building computers, but I was unsure if there would be any significant performance issues by installing a 13700k on a Z690 board and I was unable to find much information on the topic (likely because the chips/MBs are fairly new).

I was originally planning on purchasing a 13600K on a Z790 board. However, after learning that I could install a 13-series chip into a Z690 board, I figured I could change from the planned i5 on a Z790 board to an i7 on a Z690 board by using the price difference between the two boards to mostly offset the price difference between the processors. I'd also point out that I'm currently using an ITX board and case due to space concerns.

Thanks for the help!
