You will not be taking a performance hit at all unless you get a lower quality z690 board(cheaper board might not oc as high). The only difference in the chipsets themselves are more pcie lanes so unless you need a lot of m.2 storage you will be fine with z690. Also remember that you will most likely need a bios update if you go with z690 so get one with bios flashback if you don’t have a 12th gen cpu to do that with. What is the difference between Z790 and Z690?
Not much has changed with Intel’s latest Z790 chipset. The PCI express lanes have been reallocated for more PCIe 4.0 lanes, there is an extra USB 3.2 20 GBps port, and the motherboard supports up to 5600 MT/s DDR5 memory.

Is it worth upgrading to Z790 from Z690?
Not really; unless you absolutely want the small number of upgrades that the Z790 brings, there is no need to swap out the Z690 motherboard with the latest Z790. Especially if you have a high-end Z690 motherboard.

Can I use my i9-13900K with a Z690 motherboard?
Yes, since the Raptor Lake CPUs use the older LGA 1700 socket, you can pair any 13th-gen chipset with Z690 motherboards. All you need is a BIOS update from your motherboard manufacturer, and you should be ready.

r/buildapc on Reddit: Z690 vs Z790 - Is there any Difference?
October 22, 2022 -
I intend on buying the i9-13900ks when they release to replace my 9900k. I wanted to pick up the z790 EVGA Dark Kingpin board for it, but got just an offer for a Z690 Asus Maximus Extreme for under $400 USD never opened by a buddy. What kind of hit would I be taking going the z690 platform over z790? Will it affect gaming performance at all?
Thanks!

Considering only the chipsets(Z790 vs Z690) the obvious difference will be the additional PCIe lanes i.e 20 lanes at PCIe 4.0 for the Z790 vs 12 lanes at PCIe 4.0 for the Z690, in simpler terms 5 M.2 slots (+1 from CPU) vs 3 M.2 Slots (+1 from CPU) respectively and this is purely from the chipsets not the specific tiers of expensive/cheap motherboards and the form factors(ATX, EATX mATX ITX) which will vary in I/O because of several factors like cost and PCB real-estate Additionally the Z790 chipsets will be able to provide one more USB 3.2 2x2 port than Z690 and finally the PCIe 3.0 lanes were cut in half to 8 lanes in Z790 from 16 lanes on Z690, since these lanes are used for other low bandwidth devices like, capture card sound/wifi cards it won't make much difference for that compromise The only compromise is that the Z790 has no support for Optane memory which not many people are using these days anyway Apart from these, there won't be any difference in gaming performance

r/intel on Reddit: Is there any reason to choose Z690 over Z790 for a new build ?
September 7, 2023 -
Hi folks.
I'm considering a new build based on Intel CPU (Preferably 14900K next month?).
Is there any reason to choose Z690 over Z790 for a new build ?

You would be crazy not to get one of the NEWER Z790 MB that support higher Memory Clock speeds. In addition to WiFi7. And even crazier not to go DDR5 with the newer games benefiting from the higher bandwidth (finally). If this will hold you over for the next few years, no sense saving the 75 - 100 dollars. I kick myself now staying on DDR4 with a Z690.

You need a Z790 only if you want to run high DDR5 speeds, like 7200++. Otherwise Z690 is perfectly fine.
