81 years ago in June 1943, the streets of Los Angeles erupted into violence during what would come to be known as the Zoot Suit Riots - a week-long wave of racially charged attacks led by U.S. servicemen against young Mexican-American, Black, and Filipino men.
Their “crime”? Wearing zoot suits - flamboyant, oversized outfits seen as defiant and “un-American” during wartime fabric rationing.
On June 3, 1943, hundreds of sailors flooded Mexican-American neighborhoods, assaulting anyone wearing the iconic suit. Victims were stripped, beaten, and arrested - while attackers were hailed as heroes.
The riots exposed deep racial tensions in LA, with media and police siding against the youth.
California Governor Earl Warren formed a committee which concluded that racial prejudice was the root cause, compounded by media bias and law enforcement failure.
The zoot suit, with its sharp lines and bold energy, wasn’t just a fashion statement. It was a symbol of identity, resistance, and pride.

My local swing scene here has a kind of tradition to play this song on birthday jams. Other than that, it is not a song DJs often play.
But recently we had some negative feedback from an international dancer that the song is not swing and we shouldn't play that on parties.
On a side note, during this year's herräng week 4, at the one of the daily meetings, this particular song was mocked for being played instead some other songs.
What I like to know is, other than the drum parts alongside, since I hear good shuffle rhythms and feel good energy when hearing this in total, the reason that so called swing scenes or personas keep themselves from this song (or band) apart is, simply, what?
I thought maybe a political reason since the zoot suit riots have a negative influence on 40's america, but I am not sure.

What I like to know is, other than the drum parts alongside, since I hear good shuffle rhythms and feel good energy when hearing this in total, the reason that so called swing scenes or personas keep themselves from this song (or band) apart is, simply, what? Well - the shuffle rhythms are a huge part of the reason. In authentic swing, the job of the rhythm section is not to enforce any kind of swung rhythm, but to play a regular pulse in the music which the other instruments can play around to create the essential polyrhythms which constitute swing. For a great example of a pure (and great) rhythm section (and little else) at work - listen to Basie's Carnegie Hall Honeysuckle Rose solo (starts at 6:52) In Zoot Suit Riot, the rhythm guys are spelling out those shuffle rhythms so strongly, they're practically being dictated, rather than giving the other musicians (and the dancers) a rhythmic framework to play with - so their freedom to play with the rhythms is minimal. So for my money, it's nothing to do with any politics, the Zoot suites, or even the very strange hat that the he wears in the video :P - it's not swing, and it has the wrong feel for Lindy.
