When is it ok to use 1/2" plywood?
Any drawer box you're making that can be supported by normal retail drawer slides can be made out of 1/2 and be plenty strong. 3/4" could be worth consideration if you're looking to build a drawer that would require heavy duty drawer hardware. Laminating to 3/4" plywood to make a 1.25" thick top, the standard thickness for a contract-grade desktop. For the back of a bookcase or cabinet, even 1/2" would be way overkill. More on reddit.com
Is 1/2” plywood strong enough?
I'm not an engineer, but I only use 3/4 in plywood when making anything structural or that will have to bear weight. And it's only my opinion, but I think 3/4 looks better/more sturdy. More on reddit.com

It seems like 3/4" is the standard for building everything, but surely there's a good use for 1/2" or they wouldn't make it. It's there a rule of thumb I should be following? TIA

Carpentry vs woodworking. Sure, build your under floors and deck out the attic with 3/4 b/c spf. Plenty of woodworking projects with 1/2in baltic birch. Small table tops, jigs, drawers, face frames, boxes. I have a 3 drawer deck in the back of my suburban, middle span is 20 inches wide, and it's plenty stiff to sit on. Also a desk riser at work, 30 inch spans, I wouldn't stand on it all the time, but it's plenty stiff enough to lean on it. It's like asking if it's ever OK to drive a civic vs a f350, or use black pepper rather than reapers, or why bother with a tack hammer if you already have a sledge hammer.

Designing a built-in mudroom and I’m not sure if the bottom cubby/bench portion can be built from 1/2” white birch plywood. This portion of the built-in is 22” D x 61” W with supports approximately 20 inches apart, will also have poplar face frame. On top of this bench portion will be a 1” veneered particle board bench top. My question is- will this bench be sturdy enough to hold the weight of the rest of the built in?
