What's the wattage or current rating on the transformer(s) you are looking at? 145 watts continuous from a 12v supply is a fair bit of current so you need a chunky power supply. 54 metres is a long run for 12 volts The best cable to decrease voltage drop is the thickest gauge you can afford and able to run. March 9, 2025Why is low voltage landscape lighting so overpriced and hard to come by? I can only find expensive garbage or higher quality stuff that’s not available in the USA or unavailable via retail. Any insights or (preferably) recommendations?
Look for a siteone, Ewing, central, Aquarius or any other irrigation/landscape supply house in your area. You'll be able to get products from the brands the pros use. You'll be paying retail prices though unless you have a Tax ID that you can start a contractor account with but even then you're not gonna get the best pricing. Home Depot has Kichler stuff. I really like their smart transformer. Home Depot also has deals on their stuff so you can get close to or even below contractor pricing at the right time. Brilliance makes great LED strip lights but they are expensive. FX Luxor line for integrated ZDC fixtures and highly customizable zoning. Really good stuff but ridiculously expensive. Volt is sold at Home Depot and you can order direct from them. I think they sell packages of transformer and fixtures. Their quality is middle or the road. They have a lot of drop in fixtures that are cast bronze which is better than painted aluminum. Depending on where you are located you are going to want to weigh differences between brass and bronze when picking fixtures. Most professionals are going with integrated fixtures which have their benefits over a drop in lamp style fixture. More on reddit.com

November 13, 2024Best outdoor LED lights that can connect to existing 12v landscaping power?
I think most landscape lighting is 24v AC and LED strips are 12v DC so I don't think you'll find anything compatible. You can just put a 12vdc transformer on a smart switch though. Also, LED strips (even the waterproof kind) are very unreliable. You'll spend more time on repairs than it's worth. I belong to a few outdoor christmas lighting groups and the saying is "Friends don't let friends do strips" More on reddit.com

Pipe stubs. 24" trenches for direct burial uf wire. Line voltage fixtures. Weather proof round boxes. Mounting posts. Wired to a switch and/or photocell. Could be done. Wouldn't be remotely cheap. Wouldn't have the look of low voltage accent fixtures. More on reddit.com

Hey all..... looking for some advice from experienced electricians or landscape lighting pros.
I’m setting up a 12V low-voltage outdoor lighting system in my backyard and would love some input on the best approach. Here's the setup:
Lighting Plan:

12 lights (MR16 housings) along a fence line that's 20m total
-
17 lights (MR16 housings) along a garden bed that’s 36m total
-
The outdoor power outlet (where the transformer will go) is:

~13m from the first light on the fence line
-
~18m from the first light on the garden bed
-
So the total cable length:

Fence line: ~30m from outlet to last light
-
Garden bed: ~54m from outlet to last light
Each light will be using a 5W MR16 bulbs (so total load is about 145W if all run on one transformer).
Questions:

Should I use 1 transformer to power both runs, or would 2 transformers+ be better?
-
What’s the best cable gauge to use to keep voltage drop minimal along long runs? Direct Burial? Including connections? T Bar? Junctions?
-
Any other suggestions!!??
Appreciate any suggestions or recommendations from people who’ve done long runs like this before!

Yellow line = garden bed, approximately 36m in total

Green line = fence line, around 10m long, but noted as 20m since lights are on both sides of the fence (represented in pink)

Red dot = the only outdoor power socket on the house

A direct run from the power socket to the start of the fence line (green) is about 13m

A direct run from the power socket to the start of the garden bed (yellow) is around 6–8m
**EDIT 2:**
Happy to go 24V set up for this as it's a long run.
Just need some advise on connectors and what gauge wire would be suitable to get for it.

Need a bit more detail about the lights. LED? Halogen? At those lengths you need to do everything you can to keep the current down; split it into two runs, use 24v if you can Many 12v mr16 LEDs work fine off 24v so that might be helpful. You still will need hundred of dollars of pretty heavy gauge cable. You’re also likely to see a fair bit of voltage drop from one end to the other which you can mitigate a bit by running it in a loop. ON mobile now but I can come back with a bit more detail later

I want to install flush mount low voltage lighting into these walls I fabricated. The cost of the (very) limited supply of product on the market would approach the cost of what they are installed in. The products are unimpressive, expensive, and leave a lot to be desired. Can anyone refer me to resources or dealers I may be missing, or that I should take a look at?
