The popularity of sports clothes in the 1920s is often attributed, like many of the most popular styles of the twenties, to Coco Chanel, but designers such as Jane Regny and Jean Patou also contributed to the sportswear trend. Patou’s yellow skirt and sweater set show how much tennis clothes influenced design (Fig. 7). Tennis was the most popular sport for women and thus the most popular inspiration for fashion.

In the 1930s, fashion saw a profound influence from films and specifically Hollywood. Men’s, women’s, and children’s styles were based on fashions seen on screen with stars like Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, and Shirley Temple among the many who directly influenced fashion. A return to conservatism after the Roaring Twenties also marked fashion during this period. As the 1920s turned into the 1930s, women’s fashion softly evolved from the boyish look of the previous decade into the feminine silhouette of the early thirties.

December 5, 2023 - World War I ended and euphoria was the order of the day. Fashion responded by dropping waists to high hip levels as dresses became unfitted. “The Roaring ’20s” ushered in a period of optimism and frivolity, complete with daring fashions for women that broke from the Victorian standard of dress. With the stock market crash of 1929, the 1930s were markedly more subdued. As the United States struggled through the Great Depression, the somber tones were reflected in people’s everyday wear, though cinematic stars still wore dazzling outfits. The 1920s and 1930s details how men and women dressed during the periods between World War I and World War II, giving ample examples of the style of costumes and fashions popular at the time.

There's fashionconservatory.com , which is a vetted site, meaning the sellers have had to be approved that they're knowledgeable about the vintage clothing they sell before they're able to list anything there. There are a number of individual sellers who have stand-alone sites who are very good and reliable. There are some sellers on Etsy who are also very good and reliable, many who also have standalone sites. Some specialise in older vintage, 20s, 30s, older, and some younger. Pastperfect.com is a seller I have all confidence in for selling vintage in this age range, plus older and newer. There are others, too.

Clothing from that era is made with natural fibers that, in the inevitable march of time, have broken down past the point of repair. Surviving garments have been preserved either through sheer luck, or meticulous care. While you might occasionally find a piece from the 1920s or 1930s floating around thrift shops, most will be available only from serious vintage vendors. I suggest searching Etsy with specific terms for what you’re seeking (example: 1920s beach pajamas, or 1930s tuxedo pants) and be prepared to pay handsomely for the pleasure of owning a 100 year old piece of fashion history.
