The popularity of sports clothes in the 1920s is often attributed, like many of the most popular styles of the twenties, to Coco Chanel, but designers such as Jane Regny and Jean Patou also contributed to the sportswear trend. Patou’s yellow skirt and sweater set show how much tennis clothes influenced design (Fig. 7). Tennis was the most popular sport for women and thus the most popular inspiration for fashion.

İ wonder it that 1920s sillouette was ever really a desirable body-type, or just a desirable clothes sillouette. When I was in highschool the fashionable clothed sillouette was long, oversized sweaters with leggings but the desirable body-type was still the hour-glass. More on reddit.com

What clothing trends for women were most associated with the 1920s and 1930s?
This is a great list. I would also add some sort of undergarment category. Prior to this time foundational garments were corset-types which rigidly held the woman in place. During this time, corsets and foundation garments went out of style and young women sometimes went braless. I saw a wonderful exhibit of pre-WWII fashion at the Fountainhead Antique Car Museum in Fairbanks, Alaska and another headgear style I had not seen before were ‘wigs’ made of tiny beads in a very short wave style to mimic hair but in silver or gold to match your outfit. Really cool. More on reddit.com

December 5, 2023 - World War I ended and euphoria was the order of the day. Fashion responded by dropping waists to high hip levels as dresses became unfitted. While some gowns retained the design complexity of the Teens, the trend was toward Simplicity. Simple bodices, shaped using only a few tucks or shirring at the shoulders, or a little gather at the side seam reflected this new freedom.

What I mean by this is that I remember reading somewhere once that bell bottoms which were popular in the 60s and 70s have been around since the 20s, which shocked me.

I'm a college art history instructor and I explain it that I don't really think of it is as "decade" that we have return over and over, but a concept of returning to items that are a hold over until better conditions are available to encourage consumerism and creativity. In times of economic hardship, there are items and looks that reappear as trends as consumers aren't able to splurge. For example, 1930s - 40s era which was a wartime - those looks were recycled in the 70s, which was also a war era. In the 1990s we started to see the return of those same looks, which coincided with the middle eastern wars and then 9/11. In times of economic hardship - more utilitarian, neutral colored pieces are most commonly seen, along with a renewed interest in handmade and heirloom looks. Ie - Plaids, cottage dresses, hand crochet pieces.. In times when stability and prosperity is wide spread, you see trends, bolder colors, more expressive silhouettes and a push for customers to want to get rid of everything old in favor of the new (1950s, 1980s)

In the 1930s, fashion saw a profound influence from films and specifically Hollywood. Men’s, women’s, and children’s styles were based on fashions seen on screen with stars like Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, and Shirley Temple among the many who directly influenced fashion. A return to conservatism after the Roaring Twenties also marked fashion during this period. As the 1920s turned into the 1930s, women’s fashion softly evolved from the boyish look of the previous decade into the feminine silhouette of the early thirties.

“The Roaring ’20s” ushered in a period of optimism and frivolity, complete with daring fashions for women that broke from the Victorian standard of dress. With the stock market crash of 1929, the 1930s were markedly more subdued. As the United States struggled through the Great Depression, the somber tones were reflected in people’s everyday wear, though cinematic stars still wore dazzling outfits. The 1920s and 1930s details how men and women dressed during the periods between World War I and World War II, giving ample examples of the style of costumes and fashions popular at the time.
