3mm discs can do light grinding. 1mm discs will explode. For an Ikea part I'd use the thinnest one available and go very slowly to avoid heating it up too much. Neither will leave you with anything approaching a clean finish. More on reddit.com

I went with the Norton BlueFire because: I was in Lowes and that’s what they had, and 2 it advertised 3x life and speed over aluminum oxide disks (who knows if it’s true). If I ever use it I will update. More then the Diablo, still way cheaper then the Milwaukee More on reddit.com

Absolutely. The industry standard for grinders is as follows: Rotary Tools (i.e. Dremel TM) - 1/8" 3" Cut off tools and Die Grinder - 1/4" & 3/8” 4" Angle Grinder - 5/8" 4-1/2", 5”, 6", 7" Angle Grinder - 7/8" arbor flange for a 5/8\" coarse arbor shaft. I am getting conflicting info through google and online shops, hence asking here.
My question is about the disc thickness. Google leads me to think I should use 1mm - 1.6mm. But the shop I am buying all the kit from only sell 3mm metal cutting discs.
They sell 1mm and 1.6mm discs but their purpose is not mentioned so I assume they are more for "grinding" and not cutting?
I will be using an angle grinder to cut off the ends of an old Ikea Gallant desk frame, I want a clean-ish finish but will happily sand the edges down if its rough.

It doesn't really matter the thinner ones will cut faster but won't last as long and the thicker ones are the opposite way. Since you're just cutting some IKEA shit go with the thin ones. Wear glasses and all that and do not attempt to grind with a cutting disk it'll explode and launch bits everywhere get a grinding wheel for grinding (often called a flapper disk).
