So every keeb enthusiast and their moms swear by 65% layouts but as a newcomer to the wonderful world of mechs I simply don't get it.

What office use cases are there for these layouts? If you use one at the office, i'd love to hear!

My current residence (for better or worse) has been an office for the last 3 years. Probably just portability. Unless you're a shortcut demon that really going to make use of these function keys as macros or whatever, they simply do not get used very often. Plus, 65% is a compromise between portability and usability (relative) to 60%. Some people can't really cope with the removal of arrow keys. Even if I eventually get used to 60%, the addition of arrow keys in 65% is pretty much QOL IMO. TL;DR: portable as 60% plus arrow keys, they still have use in office settings if you are feeling lazy enough to navigate by mouse.

Or its the other way around and new popular releases 65% so you buy those? (qk65 for example). Is it just a trend? Cheaper to make?

I just scrolled through this subreddit checking pics and 9 out of the first 10 keyboard had a 65% layout.

It's simple - 65% has perfect balance of small layout with essential dedicated modifier keys.

F-row is useless most of the time. So is the numpad, you still have a number row for those. Special keys like page up, printscreen, home, you usually dont need all of. I've never used home, ever. With a 65, you still have 3 of those, free to choose which. Some like the arrow keys, i couldn't do without them. Saving all the useless keys, you end up with a keyboard that is half the size and frees up desk space. Also, you have your mouse nearer to wasd which is more comfy for longer gaming sessions.

So my first mech keeb being on its way (the kbd67 lite r2), I was wondering if any of you have any tips or suggestions or perhaps some tidbits to share from your experience when mapping keys in general for any keyboard in the 65% category.

I plan to use F keys (F1, F2, etc.). Being someone who codes, I also plan to use the ~ and the `. I also use the "Del" key. With that in mind, I'm curious as to how you guys approach mapping keys to new layers when it comes to keys that don't fit on your main layer.

Do you have it so you hold down the FN toggler or just tap once to switch layers, then do you thing, then tap again to go back to main switch. Etc.

I don't use F1-12 so no help there but I'd imagine it depends on how you use them. You can toggle a layer or just combo press them. For Del, I don't use either, but I'd probably just map that to a layer + Backspace. As for ~ I'm a programmer too, so I do use that and a lot. I got rid of the Esc key and put the ~ there. Then I got rid of CapsLock and mapped it as Ctrl... But with a trick. It's Ctrl if I hold it, or if I press it and another button. If I just tap it, it's Esc.

Most people usually put F-keys on a layer behind the number row and del on a layer behind backspace There's a QMK keycode dedicated for the grave/escape Can be a little annoying for a non ortholinear board, but a numpad on a layer can be helpful for jobs where you have to type a lot of numbers, like programmer Space Cadet is also very useful, especially for programming: shift/ctrl/alt can now act as brackets/parenthesis when tapped and as their normal function when held, with left being the opening char and right being the closing one You may want to search (on a general search engine or r/olkb search engine) for QMK tips and tricks, there's a hell lot of people sharing clever things out there
