r/Spanish on Reddit: When saying year in Spanish (e.g “1972”) does it follow the same pattern as English?
August 27, 2022 -
So I’d say ‘nineteen seventy two’ – would it be ‘diecinueve setenta y dos’ in Spanish?
Top answer 1 of 2

No, standard rule is “mil novecientos setenta y dos”, although most people say “(en el) setenta y dos”. People will just assume you’re referring to any year past 1910. If it’s prior to 1910, you are expected to use the full number only. For 2000-2010 people just say the whole number (“dos mil ocho” for 2008). For 2011-onwards people may use the English pattern. (“En el veinte veintiuno” for 2021). Especially after 2015, it became a usual thing.

Nop. And picking up how Americans use it is kinda confusing when you're learning English. For instance... 1972 English: nineteen seventy two Spanish : a thousand ninehundred seventy two Mil novecientos setenta y dos Same goes with phones, in English you go three numbers at a time, in Spanish we group them in pairs.
